Anantnag Police Destroy Over 345 Kg of Seized Narcotics

Anantnag, Oct 4, KNT: Anantnag Police on Saturday participated in the disposal of a large quantity of seized narcotics and psychotropic substances under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPSA) for the year 2025. The disposal was conducted at the Industrial Growth Centre (IGC) Lassipora in Pulwama district in the presence of the Drug Disposal Committee, adhering strictly to the legal procedures outlined under the NDPS Act.

According to officials, the destroyed narcotics were linked to 49 FIRs registered under various provisions of the NDPS Act in district Anantnag. The police said the operation was part of an ongoing drive to dismantle networks involved in drug trafficking and ensure that seized contraband is destroyed in a lawful and transparent manner.

The exercise witnessed the destruction of a massive quantity of banned substances, including 138.25 kilograms of poppy straw, 22.9 kilograms of g***a, 31.936 kilograms of charas, 101.68 kilograms of fukki, 47.15 kilograms of cannabis powder, 3.18 kilograms of b**g boosa, 6.23 grams of brown sugar, and 75 bottles of codeine phosphate and wisky syrup. In total, around 345.102 kilograms of narcotic and psychotropic material were destroyed.

A senior police officer present at the site said that the disposal followed all required formalities in the presence of the committee constituted for the purpose, ensuring transparency and compliance with established norms. “The destruction of such a large quantity of contraband sends a strong message that the Anantnag Police remains steadfast in its commitment to eradicate the drug menace from society,” the officer said.

Officials from the Drug Disposal Committee appreciated the proactive approach of the Anantnag Police in identifying, seizing, and destroying the narcotic substances. They said such coordinated actions help in not only reducing the availability of drugs but also in discouraging those involved in peddling and trafficking activities.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police, under its intensified anti-narcotics campaign, has been regularly organizing similar disposal drives to ensure that seized contraband is destroyed in a timely and lawful manner. This is in line with the broader strategy to strengthen preventive mechanisms and create awareness about the consequences of drug abuse.

Police also reiterated their appeal to the public to remain vigilant and share information about any drug-related activities in their areas. “We are committed to making Anantnag a drug-free district. Public cooperation plays a key role in identifying peddlers and breaking the chain of supply,” the statement said. [KNT]

Police Bust Illegal Rebranding of Govt Rice in Awantipora, Arrests One

Awantipora, Oct 2, KNT: In a decisive crackdown on black-marketing and fraudulent trade practices, police in Awantipora uncovered an illegal operation involving the rebranding of government-supplied rice meant for public distribution. The accused, identified as Fayaz Ahmad Dar of Shaltokuna Awantipora, was arrested during the raid, while a vehicle loaded with the contraband was seized on the spot.

Officials said that the operation was launched after credible information reached Police Station Awantipora regarding suspicious activity in Shaltokuna village. Acting swiftly, a team led by Inspector Ajaz Hmad and Inspector Bilal Ahmad conducted a raid at the identified location. During the operation, a Tata Mobile vehicle bearing registration number JK06-5469 was intercepted. Upon inspection, the vehicle was found loaded with government-issued rice illegally repackaged into apple-branded bags.

Police sources revealed that a total of 80 rice bags had been deceptively repacked in fruit-branded packaging to disguise their original source, while another 37 bags of rice and related incriminating material were recovered. In all, 117 rice bags were seized from the spot.

The arrested individual, had allegedly been involved in diverting food grains supplied under the public distribution system and repackaging them for illegal sale in the open market. Police said his motive appeared to be profiteering by passing off subsidized rice as privately marketed grain.

A case has been registered at Police Station Awantipora under FIR number 207/2025 for offences punishable under sections 318(4) and 316(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Officials confirmed that further investigation is underway to trace the supply chain and identify whether more individuals or networks are involved in the fraudulent racket.

A senior police officer said that the arrest should serve as a stern warning to those attempting to misuse government supplies meant for the welfare of common people. “Rice, wheat, sugar and other essential commodities are supplied under the public distribution system to ensure food security for economically weaker sections of society. Any attempt to rebrand and divert these supplies amounts to exploitation of the poor and will be dealt with firmly,” the officer said. [KNT]
