Decades of Govt. Neglect Haunt Rakh Shalina, Shalina: PDP's Zaffer Mir

Says more than 4,000 Kanals Farmland Waterlogged & 7,000 Kanals of Rice Crops Destroyed; Demands Dewatering Station & Canal Clearance

Srinagar, Sept 7: J&K Peoples Democratic Party senior leader Zaffer Mir (Lasjan) on Sunday expressed deep concern over what he described as the government’s decades-long neglect of Rakh Shalina and Shalina, including adjoining hamlets like Zoonipora, Pahroo and Kenihama in Budgam district. He said residents, despite repeatedly parting with land for public projects, continue to bear the brunt of official apathy.

Zaffer pointed out that the locality was first divided by the railway track and later by the bypass road, yet the government failed to provide even basic amenities for the affected communities.

Highlighting the area’s chronic vulnerability, he said, “For close to three decades, the demand for a dewatering station has gone unheeded, even though this belt lies low and is perennially prone to flooding. Season after season, the appeals of local residents have fallen on deaf ears, leaving their fields, homes, and livelihoods devastated.”

He added that since 2016 he has repeatedly flagged the menace of waterlogging, which submerges over 4,000 kanals of fertile farmland each summer, while more than 7,000 kanals of rice crops have been destroyed due to floods affecting Kenihama, Pahroo and surrounding areas.

“The irrigation canals leading to the Padshahibagh flood channel remain blocked, rendering farmland useless and devastating livelihoods,” Zaffer said, adding that these areas currently bear the burden of diverted floodwaters intended to protect Srinagar city.

“Why must these sacrifices be ignored as if they mean nothing? The people of Rakh Shalina, Shalina, Pahroo, Kenihama, and Zoonipora have given enough and endured enough. They deserve dignity and protection, not continued neglect,” he asserted.

Appealing for urgent intervention, Zaffer demanded the immediate establishment of a dewatering station and the restoration of blocked irrigation channels.

“The persistent suffering and neglect faced by these communities cannot continue. Their patience has been tested, their sacrifices immense, and it is high time the administration acts. Relief is not a favour; it is their rightful due,” he concluded.

Zonipora-Budgam’s paddy fields ravaged by deluge, residents parched: Zaffer Mir

Demands immediate rescue amid waterlogging and power cuts.

Srinagar, Sept 5: J&K People’s Democratic Party senior leader Zaffer Mir (Lasjan) has voiced grave concern over the worsening humanitarian and agrarian crisis in Zonipora, Budgam, where residents are grappling with parched taps, snapped electricity and crippling waterlogging.

In a statement issued here, Zaffer highlighted that the recent breach of river Jhelum has inundated vast stretches of fertile paddy land on the outskirts of Srinagar, devastating standing crops and leaving hundreds of families on the brink of ruin.

“On one hand, people are struggling for a drop of drinking water and a flicker of electricity and on the other, their fields lie submerged and destroyed,” he said. “Zonipora today mirrors the anguish of Kashmir’s countryside, abandoned in its hour of need.”

Expressing dismay over the administration’s inaction, Zaffer appealed for immediate intervention.

“Authorities are yet to reach the affected hamlets for relief and rescue. It is my earnest hope that Deputy Commissioner Budgam, Dr. Bilal Bhat, personally intervenes to provide urgent aid to the suffering families,” he urged.

The PDP leader cautioned that continued neglect could deepen the crisis and erode public trust in governance. “Calamities test the commitment of those in power. The people of Budgam should not be left to weather this disaster alone,” he remarked.

Zaffer further demanded comprehensive compensation and rehabilitation for farmers who have lost their crops, describing agriculture as “the lifeline of rural Kashmir that deserves both recognition and protection.”

Condoles Losses and Raises Public Grievances

Srinagar, Aug 23: Peoples Democratic Party senior leader Zaffer Mir (Lasjan) on Saturday visited Bugam in Chadoora and Rakhishalina in B.K. Pora to express condolences over the passing of the wife of Gh. Mohd. Bhat and Shabir Sofi.
