MLA Sheikh Khursheed Denied Meeting with Jailed MLA Mehraj Malik, Calls it “Assault on Democracy”

Srinagar, September 29: Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi has expressed strong resentment over the denial of a lawful meeting between Senior AIP leader and MLA Langate Sheikh Khursheed and jailed MLA Doda, Mehraj Malik.

According to Inam Un Nabi, Sheikh Khursheed travelled to Kathua Jail with the intent to meet the incarcerated legislator from Doda Mehraj Malik but was shockingly barred entry by the Jail Superintendent and the Deputy Commissioner Kathua. “This is not just administrative high-handedness, but a blatant assault on democratic principles,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Sheikh Khursheed met the father of MLA Mehraj Malik, extending solidarity and assuring him that AIP stands unwaveringly with the family in this time of pain. Taking his grievance to the media, Sheikh Khursheed said, “I met the father of Hon’ble MLA Doda Mehraj Malik to share his pain because I too am a victim of the same treatment. Yet, Jail Superintendent & DC Kathua denied my lawful right to meet him. This is an assault on democracy!”

Inam Un Nabi reiterated that barring elected representatives from meeting each other in jail amounts to stifling political space in Jammu and Kashmir. He demanded immediate intervention from higher authorities and called upon democratic institutions, civil society and the judiciary to take cognizance of the unlawful denial of rights to public representatives.

“AIP will continue to raise its voice for Justice for political prisoners and will not allow the silencing of democracy in Jammu and Kashmir,” Inam Un Nabi asserted.

From Tihar, Er Rashid Appeals to Mahatma Gandhi: Stop Demonising Kashmiris, Restore Justice, Remember Kashmiri Pandits

New Delhi, September 27: On Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary, incarcerated Member of Parliament from Baramulla, Er Rashid, has written a deeply moving letter to the Father of the Nation, addressing him affectionately as “Bapu.” The letter, sent from Tihar Jail through the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, blends reverence for Gandhi’s ideals with anguish over Kashmir’s current reality.

AIP Chief Spokesman Inam Un Nabi made the letter public in which Er Rashid begins with a universal appeal: “Adab Bapu, please accept my best wishes on the eve of your birthday. Not only India but the entire world is in desperate need of peace.” He laments that while Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence is more relevant than ever, nations across the globe directly or indirectly, continue to indulge in violence, even while claiming to fight for peace.

Criticizing the hollow invocations of Gandhi, he writes: “Almost every country willingly or unwillingly contributes to violence, but makes ridiculous claims of fighting for peace. Those who speak most of your message, Bapu, hardly match their words with deeds.”

Drawing on history, Er Rashid recalls Gandhi’s role during Partition: “When the subcontinent was burning in communal flames, Gandhi Ji saw Kashmir as a beacon of hope and harmony.” Linking it to the present, he adds with pain: “But as of now, we Kashmiris are being branded anti-national, Pak proxies, communal, stone-pelters, anti-Hindu, militants, radicals, what not.” The contrast, he suggests, is stark what was once a land that symbolized Gandhi’s hope has now been reduced to suspicion and stigma.

Reaffirming the dignity of faith, Er Rashid writes: “Being Islamist is an honour for every Muslim and no true Muslim can ever be radical.” In doing so, he invokes Gandhi’s lifelong insistence that faith and fraternity can never be equated with violence.

The MP goes on to highlight the misuse of draconian laws: “Those who speak against UAPA terrorism , prefer silence as they are scared of the law of the land. Thousands lie in graves, men in prisons lose their lives and thousands of us are in jails because of the misdeeds of Partition, for which nobody takes responsibility.”

Er Rashid also acknowledges the plight of Kashmiri Pandits and border residents: “Kashmiri Pandits, who by your own confession were protected by Kashmiri Muslims at the cost of their own lives, are still living as refugees. Men, women and children from border areas continue to live displaced lives near the LoC—second homes for those who cannot return.”

Condemning divisive politics, Er Rashid warns: “Your vision of non-violence has been replaced by draconian policies. Instead of harmony, Muslims are branded outsiders, with terms like ‘Baber ki Aulad’ legitimizing hate.” For him, Gandhi’s India has lost its moral compass.

The letter concludes with both symbolism and protest: “To remind the countrymen of the significance of your non-violence principle, *I will observe two days hunger strike from 1st October 10 am to 3rd October 10 am in Tihar Jail.”*

Reacting to the letter, AIP Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi said: “Every line Er Rashid has written to Bapu is not just a tribute to Gandhi Ji, it is a mirror to our times. When Gandhi Ji could see Kashmir as a beacon of hope amidst Partition, why is it today that Kashmiris are only seen through the lens of suspicion? The letter reminds the nation that Gandhi’s legacy lies not in rituals or garlands, but in justice, peace and reconciliation.”

The letter suffused with pain and principle, stands as both a personal testimony and a national reminder. Gandhi’s message remains unfinished business in Kashmir and beyond.

Er Rashid Terrorised and Humiliated in Jail; AIP Accuses BJP Govt of Bulldozing His Self-Respect

Srinagar, Sep 24 : Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) has strongly condemned what it termed as a deliberate assault on the dignity of its President and Baramulla MP, Engineer Rashid, inside Tihar Jail No. 3. The party alleged that jail authorities terrorised and humiliated him on September 18 and 19 after he refused to withdraw a complaint against the jail superintendent for subjecting inmates to horror, humiliation and torture over the past month.

AIP Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi, in a statement, said: “After encouraging a murderous assault on Engineer Rashid by two notorious inmates on 31st August, the situation worsened when Engineer Rashid Sahab stood firm and refused to withdraw his complaint. Instead of forwarding the complaint to higher authorities as required by law, the superintendent made every attempt to bury it.”

Inam Un Nabi further revealed that on September 16, Er Rashid’s legal counsel, Advocate Hasnain Khwaja, was deliberately denied a meeting with him. “The jail superintendent kept Advocate Khwaja waiting from 3:00 pm to 4:40 pm only to prevent Engineer Rasheed Sahab from narrating the developments to his lawyer. When the lawyer finally left, humiliated and empty-handed, it became evident that authorities were trying to cover up their misconduct,” he said.

According to Inam Un Nabi, matters escalated when on the morning of September 17, Engineer Rashid Sb declined to meet the Jail Superintendent, Mr. Gupta, who claims to be a close relative of Delhi CM Rekha Gupta. “Hurt, humiliated and disturbed, Engineer Rashid Sahab refused to meet Mr. Gupta. In retaliation, on September 18 around half a dozen jail officials stormed his cell without even removing their shoes, pressurising him for hours to vacate immediately under the pretext of a transfer order,” he stated.

He added: “Despite Er Rashid Sahab’s request that packing belongings late in the evening was impossible, officials kept harassing him till 8:00 pm. The next morning, September 19, he was forcibly shifted from the cell without being allowed breakfast or even morning prayers. This is nothing but institutionalised harassment.”

Inam Un Nabi said that jail authorities are threatened by Engineer Rashid’s campaign for basic jail reforms, particularly his call to end the colonial practice of forcing inmates regardless of age, caste, creed or religion to remove footwear when entering the offices of the Jail Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent.

“These dirty tricks cannot silence Engineer Rashid. Even in jail, he continues to speak for the legitimate rights of the people,” Inam Un Nabi declared. “It is evident from the series of developments that some officials, intoxicated by ultra-nationalist arrogance, believe that humiliating Kashmiris is their birthright and a service to the nation. This mindset is dangerous and unacceptable.”

Demanding accountability, Inam Un Nabi called for “an independent probe by a competent authority, NHRC or a retired judge into the entire episode” and warned the government of serious consequences if it continues “bulldozing the self-respect and legitimate rights of Engineer Rashid and other Kashmiri inmates.”

Inam Un Nabi said that Er Rashid started his hunger strike today at 11 am 3 as announced in his letter addressed to the Director General of Prisons. The symbolic strike will continue till September 22 morning.

He added that Er Rashid has dedicated this hunger strike to awaken the conscience of people in both countries and remind them that around 70,000 lives have been lost in Kashmir since 1989 due to the hostility between India and Pakistan.

AIP Releases Letter of MP Er Rashid Announcing Two-Day Hunger Strike in Tihar Jail

Srinagar, September 19: Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi on Friday released a letter written by incarcerated Member Parliament Baramulla, Er Rashid, to the Director General Prisons, Tihar Jail, New Delhi. In the letter, Er Rashid announced his decision to undertake a two-day hunger strike inside the jail, beginning on September 20 at 11 am, lasting for a maximum of 48 hours.

In his letter, Er Rashid termed the hunger strike as a symbolic protest to “call out the hypocrisy of Indian and Pakistani governments” who, according to him, are “befooling their people with fake cricket tamashas in the name of Asia Cup, while ignoring the sacrifices and sufferings of people of Jammu and Kashmir.”

Er Rashid reminded that around 70,000 lives have been lost in J&K since 1989 due to hostility between the two neighboring countries who, he said, “share similar genes, values, origin and traditions.” He stressed that people of Jammu and Kashmir need peace more than anyone else, but unfortunately, the region continues to be treated as a “laboratory for immoral and illogical political experiments.”

The incarcerated MP questioned why India and Pakistan can play cricket, share stages on international platforms and engage in Track-2 dialogues, but fail to hear “the voice of pain of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.”

He asked civil society, judiciary, media and political parties on both sides to rise above rhetoric and respect the political and human rights of the people.

Er Rashid also called out Pakistan, recalling how Kashmiri voices close to the establishment were once dismissed as “Indian agents,” while now “Pakistani leaders are begging for handshakes with Indian cricketers who dedicated their victory to Operation Sindoor.”
“This hunger strike is to wake the conscience of people of India and Pakistan towards the unending sufferings and denial of legitimate political and human rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” Er Rashid wrote, adding that the strike is also meant to “call out the cricket hypocrisy of both hate mongers and so-called peace lovers.”

The letter has also been sent to his legal counsel, Adv Vikhyat Oberoi and Adv Javeed Hubbi, as well as to his family.
