*Vande Bharat Train to Be Extended From Jammu to Srinagar Soon: Railways Department*

*Ishwar Singh*

Jammu, Sep 25, KNT: The Railways Department has announced that the Vande Bharat train, which is currently operating between Katra and Srinagar, will soon be extended to commence its journey from Jammu. Preparations are in full swing to facilitate the expansion of the semi-high-speed service, Divisional Railway Manager Jammu, Vivek Kumar confirmed on Thursday.

While talking to reporters, Kumar said that the plan to link Jammu directly with Srinagar through Vande Bharat had been delayed due to widespread damage to railway tracks caused by recent incessant rains and floods. However, he assured that restoration work is underway at a rapid pace and the service will be launched once safety clearances are in place.

“We are working on it. The delay occurred because of massive damage to tracks due to floods and heavy rains. But sooner or later, this service will be available to the people of Jammu,” he said.

The Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat service, introduced earlier this year, has already eased travel time between the Valley and the base camp of Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. The extension to Jammu is expected to further boost connectivity, benefiting commuters, pilgrims, and tourists alike.

Divisional Railway Manager Jammu, Vivek Kumar, added that once the extension becomes operational, the train is expected to run on a daily schedule, connecting Jammu to Srinagar with improved travel comfort and reduced journey time compared to existing rail and road services. [KNT]

*J&K Govt Orders Mandatory Anti-Drug Measures in Schools and Coaching Centres*

*Frisking, CCTV Surveillance, Counsellors and Helpline Part of New Guidelines*

Srinagar, Sep 25, KNT: Alarmed by the growing menace of drug abuse among school-going children, the Jammu and Kashmir School Education Department has issued a fresh circular mandating strict preventive measures in all government and recognised private schools as well as coaching and tuition centres across the Union Territory.

The circular stresses that drug addiction among students not only endangers their health and future but also undermines the very purpose of education. The department has directed institutions to adopt deterrent mechanisms with immediate effect.

According to the order, teachers and staff members are required to frisk students at the time of entry to prevent the carrying of prohibited or intoxicating substances. Random frisking during school hours has also been made compulsory to ensure constant vigilance. Heads of institutions have been instructed to carry out regular inspections and to document and address suspicious behaviour without delay.

Each school must frame a “Drug-Free School Policy” that clearly outlines prohibitions, reporting mechanisms, and disciplinary consequences. In addition, vigilance committees comprising teachers, parents, and student representatives will be set up to maintain a safe and drug-free environment.

The circular further calls for the mandatory installation of CCTV cameras in schools and coaching centres. Vulnerable areas such as canteens, secluded corners, and nearby establishments like tuck shops will be kept under strict monitoring.

To deal with cases related to drug abuse, every school must designate a teaching official as a trained counsellor, while counselling cells will be established in all institutions. The Directorate, in collaboration with SCERT, DIETs, and IMHANS, will organize special training programmes for these officials.

For immediate assistance, the government has announced the establishment of a dedicated Drug Abuse Prevention Helpline at the Directorates of School Education J&K. Cases of student abuse or negligence by school authorities are to be reported directly to this helpline, which will forward them to concerned agencies for swift action.

The circular also emphasizes the role of awareness and parental involvement. Schools have been asked to organize regular awareness programmes, seminars, and cultural activities highlighting the ill effects of drug abuse. Police, IMHANS, NGOs, and teacher education institutes will collaborate with schools for sustained sensitization campaigns.

Special parent-teacher meetings focusing on early detection of drug abuse have also been made mandatory, with parents being encouraged to play a proactive role in prevention. Meanwhile, institutions have been instructed to engage students in positive and constructive activities as a safeguard against addiction.

Officials said the measures are aimed at protecting young minds from harmful influences and preserving the sanctity of education. “Schools and coaching centres are not only places of learning but also of character formation. Safeguarding students from the drug menace is essential to secure their well-being and the future of our society.” [KNT]

*Situation in Ladakh serious matter, Delhi must adopt dialogue process: Farooq Abdullah*

Owais Gul

Srinagar, Sep 25 (KNO): National Conference president, Farooq Abdullah Thursday said that the prevailing situation in Ladakh is a serious concern and that the Centre must stop the use of force and adopt dialogue process to resolve pressing issues.

Addressing a press conference at party headquarters here, Farooq Abdullah, per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said people of Ladakh led by activist Sonam Wangchuk were peacefully protesting for the last 15 days, demanding statehood and 6th Schedule.

He said that Sonam Wangchuk had even walked on foot from Leh to Delhi to highlight their demands, but the authorities did not address their concerns properly. "Initially protests were non-violent. The younger generation in Ladakh believed in the promises made to them. However, when these promises proved hollow, frustration grew, and they took to the streets. They abandoned peaceful means," he said.

He added that some incidents during the protests included the burning of BJP offices, police vehicles, and attempts to set public offices on fire.

Farooq Abdullah warned of broader implications, stating that Ladakh is a border region and China occupies a significant portion of the land. "Such unrest in these sensitive areas is dangerous for our nation. Efforts must be made to resolve these issues through dialogue and prevent any further escalation."

Responding to query that the protests were influenced by external forces, he said he doesn't believe any external group is behind this. "I have seen such situations before. This is the genuine voice of the local people. They will not wait indefinitely. The government must remember the promises made to Ladakh regarding elections, delimitation, and statehood," he said.

The NC patron also said that it has been almost 11 months since promises were made regarding statehood to Jammu and Kashmir , yet there has been no progress. He urged authorities to learn from the situation in Ladakh—(KNO)
