Medical shops accused of overcharging despite GST reduction in medicines

Shahid Mehraj

Srinagar, Oct 11, CNS: Despite a reduction in Goods and Services Tax (GST) on several essential medicines, many medical shops across Kashmir continue to charge customers higher prices, drawing widespread criticism from locals who allege that authorities have failed to ensure compliance with the revised tax norms.

Locals said that despite the GST reduction aimed at easing the burden on patients, there has been no visible change in retail prices at most chemist outlets. “Even after the GST was lowered, the medical shops continue to charge the same rates. There is no action, no accountability, and the GST rules are being openly violated,” said one customer outside a Srinagar pharmacy.

The issue has raised questions over the implementation of government directives and the lack of monitoring by the concerned departments. Locals alleged that several pharmacy owners were taking undue advantage of public unawareness by billing medicines at pre-GST rates.

Healthcare watchers said such practices amount to exploitation, especially for patients with chronic illnesses who depend on daily medication. They urged authorities, including the Drug Control Department and the Consumer Affairs wing, to initiate strict inspections and ensure that the benefits of tax reduction are passed on to the public.

Locals also demanded transparent pricing displays at all pharmacies and stringent penalties against violators. “The government must act swiftly to restore trust and ensure fair pricing in the medical sector,” said another local. (CNS)
