Every Car Engine Component Explained & Its Function

A car engine is a complex machine that transforms fuel into motion, driving the vehicle forward. To understand how engines work, it's essential to know the function of each component:

1. Rocker Arm Cover: Shields the rocker arms and valves, preventing oil leaks and protecting engine parts.

2. Rocker Cover Gasket: Seals the gap between the rocker arm cover and the engine to prevent oil leakage.

3. Rocker Arm: Transfers motion from the camshaft or pushrod to the engine valves.

4. Valve Spring: Keeps the valve closed and ensures it returns to its original position after opening.

5. Cylinder Head: Sits atop the cylinders, forming the top of the combustion chamber.

6. Head Gasket: Seals the cylinder head to the engine block, maintaining pressure and preventing leaks.

7. Cylinder: The chamber where air and fuel mix and burn to produce power.

8. Valves: Regulate airflow into and out of the combustion chamber.

How does a Starter Motor work in Engine? โ„น๏ธ
A starter motor is an electric motor that helps crank an internal combustion engine to start it. It works in the following way:

1. Activation

When the ignition key is turned (or the start button is pressed), electrical current flows from the battery to the starter solenoid.

The solenoid acts as a switch that completes the high-power circuit to the starter motor.

2. Engaging the Pinion Gear

The solenoid pushes a small pinion gear on the starter motor shaft forward to engage with the engine's flywheel (a large gear attached to the engineโ€™s crankshaft).

3. Cranking the Engine

The starter motor rotates the pinion gear, which turns the flywheel and the crankshaft.

This motion allows the engine to take in air and fuel, initiating the combustion process.

4. Disengagement

Once the engine starts running on its own, the solenoid pulls the pinion gear back, disengaging it from the flywheel.

The starter motor then stops running to prevent damage.

5. Engine Runs Independently

The engine continues running using its own power, and the starter motor is no longer needed until the next start.

The starter motor is powered by the car battery and must be powerful enough to overcome the engineโ€™s resistance, which includes compression and friction.

Imagine thisโ€”you're expecting a huge repair bill after a breakdown, only to be told that your 19-year-old engine is still covered by an "unlimited warranty"!

Sounds impossible, but that's exactly what happened to Bill Lear (creator of the Learjet) in 1963...

Bill Lear, who lived in Geneva, Switzerland at the time, flew his P-51 Mustang. But the starter clutch on his Packard-built Merlin engine kept failing. Desperate, he asked Rolls-Royce for help.

"Send us the clutch!" Rolls-Royce said.

They promptly repaired it and sent it back.

Lear thanked him and asked for the repair bill, and was shocked to hear the replyโ€”

"Dear Mr. Lear, Rolls-Royce designed products never fail. They just need some minor adjustments sometimes, and that's covered under our unlimited warranty. No charge, Sir!"

Imagine, this engine and clutch were made in the US by Packard in 1944, but Rolls-Royce still kept up to its almost two decade old quality commitment!

1. Piston:

The piston is a cylindrical component that moves up and down inside the engine cylinder. Made from lightweight aluminum alloy, it transfers the force from combustion to the crankshaft via the connecting rod.

2. Compression Rings:

These are located in grooves near the top of the piston. They form a seal between the piston and cylinder wall, preventing combustion gases from escaping into the crankcase and maintaining compression pressure.

3. Oil Rings:

Situated below the compression rings, oil rings control the amount of lubricating oil on the cylinder walls. They scrape off excess oil and return it to the sump, preventing oil from entering the combustion chamber.

4. Gudgeon Pin (Wrist Pin):

This hollow cylindrical pin connects the piston to the small end of the connecting rod, allowing for pivoting motion as the piston moves up and down.

5. Circlip:

Circlips are snap rings placed in grooves at the ends of the gudgeon pin hole. They prevent the gudgeon pin from sliding out of position during engine operation.

6. Bushing:

Found in the small end of the connecting rod, the bushing is a sleeve bearing that reduces friction between the connecting rod and gudgeon pin.

7. Connecting Rod:

This rod links the piston to the crankshaft. It converts the piston's linear motion into the rotary motion of the crankshaft. It experiences both compression and tension forces during engine cycles.

8. Bearing Shells:

These are thin metal liners located at the big end of the connecting rod. They provide a low-friction surface between the connecting rod and crankshaft, absorbing wear and supporting smooth rotation.

9. Cap:

The cap is the detachable part of the connecting rod's big end. It holds the bearing shells and bolts onto the crankshaft journal, securing the connection.
