The Koshi River is famous for changing its course frequently. The barrage was built in the late 1950s specifically to tame the river and prevent the devastating floods that earned it the nickname "The Sorrow of Bihar."
The real challenge today isn't just the water—it's the silt. The Koshi carries a massive amount of sediment from the Himalayas. Over time, this raises the riverbed, making the barrage's job much harder and increasing the risk of breaches during heavy monsoon rains.
