Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Tawang
An exposure visit was organized for the students of PM SHRI School, JNV Tawang, to provide learning opportunities beyond the classroom and to help them connect with the cultural, historical, and social heritage of Tawang. During the visit, students explored Urgeling Gonpa, Tawang Monastery, Monastery Museum, Buddha Park, Sunday Market, the War Memorial, and the Major Ralengnao “Bob” Khating Museum.
The visit commenced at Urgeling Gonpa, the revered birthplace of the 6th His Holiness the Dalai Lama, where students learned about its spiritual and historical significance. They then visited the Tawang Monastery, the second-largest monastery in Asia, where they observed prayer halls, interacted with monks, and gained insights into the rich traditions of Mahayana Buddhism. At the Tawang Monastery Museum, students viewed ancient manuscripts, artifacts, and cultural exhibits, which deepened their understanding of monastic life and the heritage of the Monpa community.
At Buddha Park, the serene environment encouraged students to reflect on the teachings of Lord Buddha. A brief visit to the Sunday Market provided exposure to local livelihoods, traditional crafts, and the vibrant daily life of Tawang.
A meaningful learning experience occurred at the Tawang War Memorial, where students paid tribute to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the 1962 Indo-China War. Stories of courage and patriotism shared during the visit left a lasting impression on them.
The final and most enriching part of the visit was at the Major Ralengnao “Bob” Khating Museum. Students learned about Major Khating’s pivotal role in establishing India’s administrative presence in Tawang in 1951 and how he worked peacefully with local leaders and the Monpa tribe to integrate the region with India. The museum’s AR/VR experience allowed students to take virtual tours of significant historical sites and frontier administrative events, making learning both engaging and interactive.
The museum also showcased the rich cultural heritage of Tawang, including traditional Monpa household items, ancient tools, clothing, weapons, and other heritage artifacts, highlighting the lifestyle, craftsmanship, and identity of the Monpa tribe.
Overall, the exposure visit was highly enriching and informative. It provided students with knowledge of history, leadership, cultural diversity, and national integration, while also demonstrating how modern technology can preserve and present heritage. The experience broadened students’ perspectives, encouraged curiosity, and strengthened their appreciation for the cultural and historical legacy of Tawang.
