250 Indians - claiming descent from a biblical tribe - were able to settle in Israel on Thursday while millions of Palestinians in the world still have no right to return to their land and experience ethnic cleansing in both Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

They were the first “Bnei Menashe” (“Sons of Manasseh”) to arrive in Israel since the Israeli government decided in November to fund the immigration of around 4,600 members of the community from the state of Manipur in northeast India.

The Shavei Israel organisation, which seeks to trace the descendants of the “lost Israeli tribes”, said that some 4,000 Bnei Menashe have already immigrated to Israel since the 1990s, with around 7,000 others still living in India.

In India, they were converted to Christianity by 19th-century missionaries.
The 250 Bnei Menashe who arrived on Thursday are to settle in northern Israel, according to the ministry of integration. They will need to convert in order to become Israeli citizens.

Some of the earliest groups from this Indian community established their illegal settlements in locations such as Hebron in the Israel-occupied West Bank and in illegal Israeli settlements in Gaza prior to 2005.

“This is the beginning of an operation that will allow the entire community to immigrate, 1,200 per year,” he said.

In response to strikes on its own critical infrastructure, Iran has threatened to target a structural weakness at the heart of Israel’s economy - its desalination infrastructure.

Here’s why Israel could be shooting itself in the foot:

🔴 Nearly 80% of Israel’s drinking water comes from the sea — but unlike the Gulf states, it concentrates its five main desalination plants along a single, narrow stretch of coastline.

🔴 Geographic clustering means there is limited redundancy if several nodes at critical civilian hubs like Ashkelon, Hadera, and Sorek are strained at once.

Dual dependency challenge

🔶 Desalination runs almost entirely on natural gas piped from offshore fields like Leviathan.

🔶 A disruption to those platforms — which are vulnerable to swarms — would simultaneously cripple both the power grid and water production

🔶 Any instability affecting energy supply can cascade directly into water output, forcing difficult prioritization decisions

🔶 The system is deeply digitized for efficiency, but also increases sensitivity to technical failures or cyber disruptions

Furthermore, Israel’s high-tech membranes reportedly require constant imports of specialty chemicals and parts, so any prolonged conflict blocking ports could force operators to choose between contamination and shutdown.

Hungary’s Prime Minister-elect Peter Magyar has said that his country must take Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu into custody if he enters Hungarian territory while wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in November 2024 over war crimes and crimes against humanity, an order that member countries are in principle obliged to enforce.

Hungary previously refused to arrest the Israeli PM when he visited Budapest in April 2025.

However, Magyar has announced he will halt the withdrawal process by 2 June.

“If a country is a member of the ICC and a person who is wanted by the ICC enters our territory, then that person must be taken into custody,” Magyar told reporters, confirming his intention to align with international law.

The shift comes after Viktor Orban’s 16-year rule ended on 12 April, following a landslide victory by Magyar’s centre-right Tisza party.

In April 2025, Hungary’s government said it had decided to withdraw from the ICC, announcing the move during Netanyahu’s state visit, his first trip to Europe since the court issued a warrant for his arrest.

However, according to Bloomberg, Magyar’s legal advisers say Hungary’s exit from the court has not been finalised, adding that the process would be halted when he takes office in early May.

🇮🇱🇱🇧🇱🇧Benjamin Netanyahu expressed regret over the actions of an Israeli soldier who destroyed a statue of Jesus Christ in southern Lebanon. The soldier will face "strict disciplinary measures," he assured.

Israel, he emphasized, carefully preserves and upholds Jewish values of tolerance and mutual respect with followers of all religions, and Christians in Israel "thrive like nowhere else in the Middle East."

The incident was reported by local media on Saturday. The IDF acknowledged that the photo indeed showed an Israeli soldier in southern Lebanon, pledged to conduct an investigation and help return the statue to its place.

On Monday morning, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar apologized for the incident. In response to his post on X, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski called not only for the soldier to be punished, but also for remembering the reasons behind such behavior of the Israeli military.
