The Garo people of Meghalaya have distinct traditional clothing for men and women, with the Dakmanda being a key piece for women—a hand-woven, decorated cloth wrapped around the lower body, often paired with a blouse (Daksari). Men traditionally wear a loincloth or a wrapped cloth called Daksara. Both genders incorporate ornaments like necklaces made of beads and decorative headwear, such as the Mechala for men during festivals.

For Garo Women

Dakmanda:
A rectangular cloth, intricately woven with floral patterns and geometric designs, wrapped around the waist like a skirt.

Daksari:
A blouse worn with the Dakmanda.

Eking:
An older, shorter loincloth that was once popular before the Dakmanda became dominant.
Ornaments:

Necklaces made of long, barrel-shaped beads (Ripok) and other jewelry are an integral part of the attire.

For Garo Men

Daksara/Loincloth: A strip of woven cloth wrapped around the waist.

Mechala: A traditional headgear worn by men during festivals.

Turban: Some men wear a turban that leaves the top of the head bare.

Kotip: Another type of traditional costume component.

Key Characteristics

Weaving:
The Garo people are skilled weavers, and their traditional clothing is often made from raw cotton, intricately woven by hand.

Designs:
The fabrics are decorated with distinctive floral patterns, broad borders, concentric diamond motifs (Mikron), and geometric designs like zig-zags and straight lines.

Identity:
The traditional attire is not just clothing but also a powerful symbol of the Garo people's identity, heritage, and pride.
