Night curfew imposed along Indo-Bangladesh border in West Garo Hills
DG News, 31 December 2025:
In view of the prevailing situation in neighbouring Bangladesh and the heightened likelihood of cross-border movement of unwanted elements, the District Magistrate of West Garo Hills, Smt. Mary Lisa K. Marak, MCS, District Magistrate Incharge has imposed a night curfew from 6:00 PM to 5:00 AM up to 200 metres from the Zero Line (International Border) along the Indo-Bangladesh border within West Garo Hills District.
The order has been issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and comes into force with immediate effect.
According to the order, the border areas of West Garo Hills remain vulnerable to illegal infiltration, movement of insurgent groups, smuggling networks, and other unlawful activities that may threaten the peace and security of the district. The night hours, in particular, pose a risk of increased movement of such elements.
The night curfew prohibits the following activities within the restricted zone:
1. Movement of individuals at the International Border with the intention to cross into Bangladesh or to illegally enter Indian Territory.
2. Unauthorised assembly of five or more persons, and carrying of sticks, rods, stones, or any items that may be used as weapons in and around the border.
3. Illegal and undesirable activities, including smuggling of cattle, contraband goods, betel nut, betel leaves, fish, dry fish, ci******es, bidis, and other prohibited items.
The District Magistrate stated that these measures are necessary to prevent uncontrolled cross-border infiltration and to maintain peace and tranquility in the district. The order has been issued ex-parte due to the urgency of the matter and will remain in force until further notice.
The night curfew directive has been circulated to all relevant government departments, law enforcement agencies, and security bodies for strict compliance and necessary action.
