Breaking News: Formalin Leak into Jatinga River Sparks Public Safety Alert in Dima Hasao
Haflong, July 2, 2026: Panic and concern have spread across parts of Dima Hasao district after the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) issued an urgent public safety advisory regarding a formalin (formaldehyde solution) leak into the Jatinga River. According to the official advisory issued by the Office of the District Commissioner, a tanker transporting formalin reportedly broke down between Jatinga and Jatinga Lampu along National Highway-27, causing the hazardous chemical to leak into the nearby river.
Authorities confirmed that the leaked formalin has entered the Jatinga River, raising serious concerns about water contamination and potential health risks for residents living along the riverbanks and downstream areas. As a precautionary measure, the District Disaster Management Authority has appealed to the public to strictly follow safety instructions until further notice.
Formalin is a chemical solution commonly used as a preservative in industries, laboratories, and medical facilities. It contains formaldehyde, a toxic chemical that can cause severe irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. Exposure to contaminated water may also lead to nausea, dizziness, vomiting, and other health complications, especially if consumed or used for domestic purposes.
In response to the incident, the DDMA has advised residents not to use water from the Jatinga River for drinking, cooking, bathing, washing, or any household activities. Farmers have also been instructed to avoid using river water for irrigation until environmental experts complete water quality assessments.
The advisory further warns livestock owners not to allow cattle or pets to drink water from the affected stretch of the river. Fishermen and local residents have also been prohibited from consuming fish or other aquatic organisms collected from the contaminated area, as toxic chemicals may accumulate in aquatic life and pose serious health risks.
Authorities have additionally requested people to avoid swimming, fishing, or entering the river until it is declared safe. Emergency response teams are monitoring the situation while environmental and disaster management officials assess the extent of contamination.
Residents who accidentally come into contact with the river water and experience symptoms such as eye irritation, skin irritation, breathing difficulties, dizziness, nausea, or vomiting have been urged to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility.
The District Administration has appealed to the public to remain calm, cooperate with emergency response agencies, and refrain from spreading rumours or unverified information on social media. Officials emphasized that only updates issued through official government channels should be trusted.
Emergency contact numbers have also been released by the District Emergency Operation Centre (DEOC) for public assistance. Citizens are encouraged to report any emergency related to the incident and seek guidance if required.
Environmental experts are expected to conduct water sampling and laboratory testing to determine the concentration of formalin in the river and assess its impact on aquatic ecosystems. Depending on the findings, authorities may issue additional advisories or initiate remediation measures to minimize environmental damage.
The incident highlights the importance of strict safety protocols during the transportation of hazardous chemicals, particularly through environmentally sensitive areas. Local residents and environmental groups have expressed concern over the possible long-term effects of chemical contamination on the river ecosystem, fisheries, agriculture, and drinking water sources.
For now, the District Disaster Management Authority has reiterated that the advisory remains in force until further notice. Residents are urged to remain vigilant, follow official instructions, and prioritize safety while authorities work to contain the situation and restore normal conditions.
Officials have assured the public that every necessary step is being taken to monitor the river, safeguard public health, and prevent further environmental damage. More updates are expected as investigations and water quality assessments continue over the coming days.
