Breaking News: Formalin Leak into Jatinga River Sparks Public Safety Alert in Dima Hasao
Haflong, July 2, 2026: Panic and concern have spread across parts of Dima Hasao district after the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) issued an urgent public safety advisory regarding a formalin (formaldehyde solution) leak into the Jatinga River. According to the official advisory issued by the Office of the District Commissioner, a tanker transporting formalin reportedly broke down between Jatinga and Jatinga Lampu along National Highway-27, causing the hazardous chemical to leak into the nearby river.
Authorities confirmed that the leaked formalin has entered the Jatinga River, raising serious concerns about water contamination and potential health risks for residents living along the riverbanks and downstream areas. As a precautionary measure, the District Disaster Management Authority has appealed to the public to strictly follow safety instructions until further notice.
Formalin is a chemical solution commonly used as a preservative in industries, laboratories, and medical facilities. It contains formaldehyde, a toxic chemical that can cause severe irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. Residents who accidentally come into contact with the river water and experience symptoms such as eye irritation, skin irritation, breathing difficulties, dizziness, nausea, or vomiting have been urged to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility.
The District Administration has appealed to the public to remain calm, cooperate with emergency response agencies, and refrain from spreading rumours or unverified information on social media. Officials emphasized that only updates issued through official government channels should be trusted.
