The murder of Shireen Abu Akleh: Another voice for Palestine muted

"Occupation forces storm Jenin and besiege a house in the Jabriyat neighbourhood. On the way there, I will bring you news as soon as the picture becomes clear," emailed Shireen Abu Akleh to Al Jazeera at 6:13 on Wednesday morning. The news never came. Abu Akleh was killed in cold blood by the Israeli forces when she went to cover their raid in a refugee camp in Jenin in the occupied West Bank. Out of nowhere, she was shot in the face by the Israeli forces, without any confrontation with them or any form of provocation. The blue flak jacket Abu Akleh was wearing was clearly marked with the word "PRESS."

A video footage of the incident shows Abu Akleh lying on the ground, her face smeared with blood—she suffered skull fractures and cerebral laceration—when she was being rescued by the local Palestinians. Later, the Israeli military raided her home, perhaps as an act to intimidate her family, friends and the greater Palestinian community into silence.

While this "shocked" the world, it did not seem to have the same effect on the Israeli apartheid regime, who initially tried to put it on the Palestinians, saying stray firing from them could have caused Abu Akleh's death. "According to the data we currently have, there is a considerable chance that armed Palestinians, who fired wildly, are what led to the unfortunate death of the journalist," tweeted Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett. Later, though, they had to resort to a reverse statement with Israel's military chief, Lt Gen Aviv Kochavi, saying they were not clear who shot Abu Akleh.

And it does not come as a surprise that for Israel, this is perhaps only business as usual, because Abu Akleh is not the first Palestinian journalist who has been killed by Israel—nor is she going to be the last, unfortunately. According to the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (PJS), since 1967, when West Bank and Gaza were occupied by Israel, 86 Palestinian journalists have been killed. In the last two years alone, six Palestinian journalists have been killed in the occupied Palestinian territory.

Recently, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the PJS, and the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians filed a complaint with the International Criminal Court for "systematic targeting of Palestinian journalists" by the Israeli forces.

Reporters without Borders (RSF) suggested that 144 Palestinian journalists had been hit with "live rounds, rubber bullets, stun grenades or tear gas fired by Israeli soldiers or police," in the occupied Palestinian territory since the beginning of the weekly Great March of Return protests in 2018. And one would remember the bombing of the offices of Al Jazeera and Associated Press (AP) in May last year in the besieged Gaza Strip, during the 11-day attack by Israel. And the lack of adequate and proportionate response by the international community after every such incident only emboldens Israeli aggression against the Palestinians. Israel perhaps is under the impression that they can continue to unleash their brutalities on the Palestinians with impunity, and they would not be wrong in thinking so, because there is no organisation, no international body to hold them accountable for their actions, just like there is no one to hold the Myanmar military accountable for their atrocities against the Rohingyas.

In the wake of Abu Akleh's murder, the US and EU, among others, have released statements condemning the killing. While the US Department of State shamelessly welcomed the investigation that was announced by Israel—the culprit investigating whether it committed the crime or not—saying the apartheid regime "has the wherewithal to conduct a thorough investigation," US Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib suggested that the US government should investigate the killing. But the US itself is one of the strongest allies of the criminal regime and provides them with weapons and the resources to carry out such heinous crimes. The irony of these two-faced statements is not lost on people. If anything, the templated condemnations and hollow words from the international community only expose their hypocrisy.

Had Abu Akleh been a Ukrainian journalist and Russian forces committed the same crime, would the response from the world community be the same? Certainly not. There would be immediate UNSC meetings, Nato discussions, a barrage of sanctions and other measures in place by now, to say the least. But for a Palestinian journalist, perhaps only a few thoughtless words suffice. And no one is asking Israel: What was its military doing, conducting a raid inside the Palestinian territory? Such illegal acts by Israel have become normalised, because they have been allowed by the international community to get away with even worse crimes—invading another's territory, ethnic cleansing, and grossly flouting international territorial and human rights conventions—over the decades.

But people are watching both Israel and the world, and their constant and bloody attempts—directly and through tacit support—to suppress the Palestinians and deny them their right to self-determination.

Shireen Abu Akleh was a journalist, whose only fault was that she was in the right place, at the right time, doing her job of exposing the truth. By killing her, Israel has once again sent a message to the journalists who are risking their lives every day to give a voice to the Palestinians, and to the Palestinians: That they shall be forced to remain voiceless.

Imran reiterates threat to his life, says has recorded video naming 'all conspirators'

PTI Chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan said on Saturday his life was in danger and that he has recorded a video in which he has taken the names of all those who "conspired against me" since last summer.

Imran, who claims he was ousted from the top office by foreign powers through local players due to his pursuance of an independent foreign policy, made these remarks in his party's political power show in Sialkot. "There is a conspiracy hatched against me in closed rooms in and outside the country, and they want that Imran Khan's life [is lost]," he said

"I knew of this conspiracy ... so I have recorded a video and kept it in a secure place. If something happens to me then this video will be [made public] in front of the nation. In it, whoever has conspired against me, whoever is complicit since last summer, I've named everyone.

"They think 'Imran Khan can be an obstacle in our path and needs to be removed.' And that's why I've recorded this video because I think this is jihad and not politics. If something happens to me then I want all my Pakistanis to know who was complicit in this conspiracy.

"I've named everyone who planned and [revealed] how, through a foreign conspiracy, this corrupt lot, together with them, and others who were with them, ended my government. I recorded the video because it's [part of the] history of how the powerful are never brought under law and always remain safe. Those who betrayed this country, I want their faces to come in the open," the PTI chairman said.

The purported threat to Imran's life was first spoken of by Faisal Vawda during the last few weeks of his government in late March.

Imran, in his speech tonight, said that his stance on rooting out corruption was not shared by those in "powerful positions".

"During my 3.5 years I tried my best that those looting this country for the last 30 years got sentenced and action was taken against them, but those in powerful positions, who were supposed to do justice, did not consider corruption bad. They've accepted that the powerful will steal and no one will catch them."

Imran urged his supporters to participate in his planned march towards Islamabad, warning that if they did not do so then "this country will be destroyed." He told his audience to brave the climatic hardships that the scorching summer is likely to throw at them on their way to the capital.

The PTI chairman also called on the youth to "start preparing immediately" for the march, adding that the government would try to impede the march by putting curbs on transport, petrol, internet and other services.

He predicted that a "sea of people" would be by his side when he heads to Islamabad.

Imran also questioned the judiciary about its handling of corruption cases against the Sharif family since the new government came into power, alleging that the officials in the Federal Investigation Agency were either being transferred or threatened.

He paid tribute to FIA's former director Mohammad Rizwan, who probed the money laundering charges against current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz, and died of a heart attack on Monday.

Imran alleged that Hamza had "threatened" Rizwan due to which he was under "immense pressure" and died as a result.

The PTI chairman claimed that another FIA investigating officer, Nadeem Akhtar, also suffered a heart attack yesterday.

"Where are the courts? It is your job to protect them," Imran said as he called out the pressure those investigating the "mafia" were subjected to.

He also lambasted the new government on the economic front, saying that the PTI regime had left it at a promising point but since the "regime change", the rupee had depreciated alarmingly and the stock market had crashed.

Denial of justice would lead to anarchy: CJI Ramana in Srinagar

SRINAGAR: It is imperative for a healthy democracy that people feel their rights and dignity are recognised and protected, Chief Justice of India N V Ramana said on Saturday, stressing that denial of justice would ultimately lead to anarchy.

Addressing a function in Srinagar, the CJI urged lawyers and judges to create a congenial environment for litigants who are often "under a lot of psychological stress".

He lamented that the justice delivery mechanism in India is very "complex and expensive" and the country is far behind in making courts inclusive and accessible.

"For the functioning of a healthy democracy, it is imperative that the people feel that their rights and dignity are protected and recognised. Expeditious adjudication of disputes is the hallmark of a healthy democracy. Denial of justice would ultimately lead to anarchy. Soon the institution of the judiciary would be destabilised as people will look for extrajudicial mechanisms," the CJI said.

The Chief Justice of India was here to lay the foundation stone of the new complex for the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

"Peace shall only prevail when people's dignity and rights are recognised and protected," he said.

Chief Justice Ramana said in India, the courts have the constitutional duty of adjudication of rights and upholding the aspirations of the Constitution.

"One of the major challenges to the protection of rule of law and human rights is the inability of the formal justice system to deliver speedy and affordable justice to all. The justice delivery mechanism in India is very complex and expensive," he said.

He said the judiciary must be at its innovative best to ensure that the challenges to its working are met with just and Constitutional measures.

"Technology has been a strong aid to the judiciary. Now, virtual courts are bridging the gaps of accessibility by reducing time, cost and distance. But in a country like India, where a vast digital divide still exists, much needs to be done in order to harness the full potential of technological innovations," he added.

The Chief Justice of India expressed happiness after laying the foundation stone of the new high court complex here.

"Solving the problems of infrastructure is very close to my heart. I have consistently emphasised the need for the development and modernisation of infrastructure.

Sadly, post-independence, judicial infrastructure has not been overhauled to meet the demands of the growing needs of modern India.

"We are far behind in making our courts inclusive and accessible. If we don't attend to this urgently, the Constitutional ideal of access to justice would stand defeated," he said.

He said the district judiciary is the foundation of the judiciary.

"Only if the foundation is strong, the entire system can flourish. As I have mentioned earlier, the condition of judicial infrastructure across the country is far from satisfactory. Courts are operating from rented accommodations and under deplorable conditions."

The chief justice began his over 20-minute speech with a famous verse by poet Ali Jawad Zaidi as he reminisced about his visits to Kashmir earlier.

"Muddaton baad jo aayaa hoon is vaadi mein Ik naya husn, naya rang nazar aata hai (I have come to this valley after ages. I can see a new beauty, new colour)."

The CJI said, "I had the fortune to visit this paradise many times, but every time I have been amazed by its beauty and moved by its hospitality. It's a land where one gets to experience four seasons. The kindness of the people here, and the enriching culture of Kashmir, transforms every soul that visits this scenic land."

The chief justice touched on various issues facing the lower judiciary and asked the concerned to take advantage of the 100 percent funding by the central government.

"The other aspect which I keep on highlighting is the need to fill up the vacancies. Twenty-two per cent of the posts in the district judiciary are still lying vacant. Steps have to be initiated immediately to fill this gap. Appropriate steps are also required to be taken for providing security and accommodation for all the Judges," he added.

Chief Justice Ramana said judges and lawyers must take an oath to work hard to make justice a reality.

"Mere laws are not enough to build tradition in a country. It requires men of indelible character inspired by high ideals to infuse life and spirit in the skeleton of the laws," he said adding the judges play a very significant role in the Constitutional scheme.

"Common man always considered the judiciary as the ultimate guardian of rights and liberties... Your swift, proactive and sensitive decision can make a lot of difference in the lives of several people who are in desperate need of justice. Create a congenial environment for the litigants. Often, litigants are under a lot of psychological stress," he said.
