A delegation of legislators from Meghalaya participated in a two-day National Workshop on Health and Education organised by PRS Legislative Research in New Delhi. The workshop aimed to equip legislators with in-depth policy insights and enhance their effectiveness in addressing key issues in the domains of health and education.
Participating from Meghalaya were Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma, along with MLAs Brening A. Sangma (Dalu), Mayralborn Syiem (Nongpoh), Gavin M. Mylliem (Sohra), Banteidor Lyngdoh (Mawkynrew), Celestine Lyngdoh (Umsning), Santa Mary Shylla (Sutnga Saipung), Gabriel Wahlang (Nongstoin), Matthew B. Kurbah (Mawphlang), Methodius Dkhar (Mawshynrut), Damanbait Lamare (Umroi), Arbinstone B. Marak (Selsella), Mizanur R. Kazi (Rajabala), and Heaving Stone Kharpran (Mawryngkneng).
The workshop addressed critical policy themes in healthcare, such as India’s increasing public investment in health, the transition towards an insurance-based healthcare model, and the importance of strengthening primary healthcare infrastructure through initiatives like Health and Wellness Centers. Despite progress, the issue of high out-of-pocket healthcare expenses remains a key challenge.
In addition, the programme delved into implementation hurdles of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, highlighting the urgent need for improved funding, teacher training, digital access, and multilingual education frameworks. Discussions emphasized the importance of effective coordination between government bodies and other stakeholders for successful policy ex*****on.
The event also spotlighted major human resource concerns in the health sector, including staff shortages, regulatory compliance, and workforce burnout—factors that significantly influence healthcare outcomes and institutional efficiency.
PRS Legislative Research, a New Delhi-based non-profit organization, has been instrumental in supporting lawmakers through evidence-based research and policy workshops. Their work spans across critical sectors such as health, education, governance, and more, aimed at strengthening the legislative process at both national and state levels.
The workshop offered a valuable platform for Meghalaya legislators to exchange ideas with experts and peers from across the country, further enhancing their role as informed and effective policymakers.
