Nine-year-old Najeeba is one of many Afghan girls living as a bacha posh. Forced by tragedy into adulthood, she now bears the weight of her family’s survival—her mother, grandmother, and six siblings. Living as a boy is the only way she can defy the rigid gender rules enforced by the Taliban on Afghan women.

Najeeba’s story is a stark reminder of the unseen and unrecognised struggles Afghan girls face today. It is also a testament to the courage and resilience of girls and women fighting for their rights under Taliban rule.

Shikha S. Lamba extends her gratitude to Afghan journalist Hewad Watandar (pen name) for his invaluable assistance in facilitating this conversation.
Thanks also to Afghan-American author for her valuable insights on the custom of Bacha posh.

This feature includes a fundraising initiative for Najeeba and her family. Please support by sharing and donating if you can.

We love receiving updates on our articles that cover social enterprises like, Mukti. Mukti is an NGO in India, that fits physically disabled children and adults with artificial limbs for free. Founded by Meena Dadha, 1986 Mukti has since then given a new life to thousands.

Mukti held its first Job Hunt camp for its physically handicapped beneficiaries recently.

The Mukti Job Hunt camp for differently-abled persons was held in Chennai recently. It was organised by Mukti, a highly reputed non-profit organisation which, since its inception in 1986,
has provided over four lakhs (400,000) artificial limbs and mobility aids free to amputees and polio affected survivors. These are financed by the M.S. Dadha Foundation and other
organisations.

Meena Dadha, Managing Trustee of Mukti, introduces, “various vocational courses were conducted previously for our beneficiaries, but did not give the satisfaction of creating
sustainable livelihood. The disabled have this restrictive idea that they cannot get jobs, but this camp turned out to be a huge success. Our goal is to help them regain their self-confidence,
achieve self- sufficiency, and support their families. Each one has been a part of the Mukti M.S. Dadha Family due to their physical disability”.

When Meena started Mukti 39 years ago, one of her prime intentions was to help the physically disabled become abled again, and more importantly, to lead a normal life. She found the
greatest challenge for them was to find employment.
The Mukti Job Hunt camp had Dr. K.M. Suceendran, Senior General Manager and Head Academic Alliances Group, Tata Consultancy Service, as Special Guest. The event was hosted in
Shree Geeta Bhavan Trust, and a complimentary lunch was served to all at the venue.

Along with 256 applicants, there was an impressive list of 29 recruiters, including corporate houses and some smaller companies. Of the 117 shortlisted candidates, 96 have been
employed for a range of jobs from Technical and BPO to Housekeeping, Lift Operator, Customer Service and Data Entry Executives.

Endorsing this, Meena states Mukti’s motto — “Share a moment, share a smile.” This reflects her personal, and Mukti’s, commitment to bringing hope and joy to individuals via its services, including providing mobility aids and facilitating employment opportunities through similar Mukti Job Hunt camps annually in future too.

Among the recently employed are, for example, Mr. Vinni, 27, from Kanyakumari who got his first job as a Customer Service Executive. He is confident of now leading his life independently.
Mr. Murali, 40, who had lost his job post-COVID, and has been jobless since, was hired by Zomato as a delivery partner. A first-time opportunity for Mrs. Hemalatha, 31, was entering SBI
Life as a Data Entry Operator. Another first timer was Ms. Padma, 25, who is now a Supervisor for Housekeeping Staff in an office.
