Untreated Chemical Effluent was discharged in Sea by greedy Industries while the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) was found Sleeping!

Greed prevailed over the Environment and Marine Life safety as lakhs of liters of untreated chemical effluent was seen floating in the sea near the Palghar district a couple of days ago. Locals claim that it was the coast guard which shot these videos and alleged that this was untreated chemical effluent from the adjoining Tarapur Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC). The industries in Tarapur MIDC have set up pipelines, which go deep into the sea and are supposed to carry the treated chemical effluents. The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and the MIDC are supposed to supervise these industries and make sure that the respective SOPs are followed but in this case, they were found sleeping while a few greedy industries took advantage of the situation. The released videos show a major portion of the sea covered in untreated chemical effluent and at a specific location, one could see a continuous discharge of thick black liquid.
We thank the MPCB, MIDC and the CETP that they have given us the opportunity to witness the sea in two colors the way we have always seen YouTube videos of the sea in two different colors – black and white, said a villager from Tarapur. We appeal to the administration to seriously look into this grave concern which has been destroying our lives and livelihood, said another local.
There is already an ongoing court case against the TIMA and the government, now in the Supreme Court appealed by the TIMA after the NGT ordered them to pay around 160 crores in fines for polluting the environment. There have been several protests in the past by the villagers who went marching to the collectors’ office and the MPCB office complaining about the pollution caused by the Tarapur Boisar MIDC.
