Last year, the inception of 98 acres happened with the philosophy of encouraging high-quality journalism on issues concerning our campus. This time we had a bigger and very dedicated team of journalists investigating some important issues.

So second in the sneak-peek series, we bring you a 98 acres article. Check it out here: https://kalpa-iiserpune.org/?p=1316

Here's a short abstract from the authors:

"These incidents are often heard, sometimes experienced, and eventually forgotten. But when they start seeping into daily routine, into shared workspaces, they leave a lasting impact."

Early last semester, in a bid to assess the prevalence of gender-based discrimination and harassment in our own campus, we had sent out an anonymous survey, asking for your experiences, hoping for a lack of them. Since most of our interviewees were women, the article is heavily filled with their experiences. But we urge readers to keep in mind that these incidents could have happened to anyone, anywhere.

Here we try to give as honest a glimpse as we can, not through our own but through the voices of those who saw and lived it. We cannot be more grateful for their courage, which they may lend to those who find their own story in these words.

As we see the virus spread peaking, the IIT-KGP administration decides to send 3000 students present on campus back home amidst the lack of transport and the imposed quarantine on multiple parts of the country on grounds of giving holidays to mess staff. A decision as such disheartened us as students and we stand in solidarity with students of IIT-KGP.

Kalpa, IISER Pune’s annual students’ magazine, releases the official students’ media body of the institute.

This media body aims at facilitating in-house communication within the institute, a platform for campus journalism and a forum where the students can feel free to voice out their opinions.

The campus journalism endeavour has its root in a newsletter called ‘Sentience’ which once used to be published by an independent group of students with aids from the student community and faculty members, and the 98 Acres section introduced experimentally in the 2019 issue of the Magazine. The newsletter and the 98 Acres section are also present on this website in an online form and will be operating throughout the year.

Apart from this, it’s meant for serving as a forum where seniors can share their academic experience with the juniors, and thus inspire them. In the near future, Kalpa looks forward to weaving a strong informal alumni network.
