Fresh hope for Dayne as G.O.A takes up Asian Games candidature

PANAJI: A fresh window of opportunity has opened for Goan windsurfer Dayne Coelho’s Asian Games hopes, with newly elected Goa Olympic Association President and Rajya Sabha MP Sadanand Shet Tanavade taking up his case with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the Union sports ministry. Tanavade has sought a review of Dayne’s eligibility for the 20th Asian Games 2026, scheduled from September 19 to October 4 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, pointing to the sailor’s current standing and international record. Dayne finished on top among 11 competitors at the Yachting Association of India’s Asian Games Selection Trial-II, winning all four races and returning a net score of six points, placing him No. 1 among the Indian competitors in the event. The 15-year international campaigner has also represented India at the 2018 Asian Games and finished fifth among Asian competitors at the 2025 iQFOiL World Championship in Aarhus, Denmark, with a best race finish of 15th in a fleet of 60. The Goa Yachting Association has also been pursuing the matter through the National Sports Federation with SAI and the IOA, seeking consideration of Dayne’s and other sailors’ cases.

Tanavade has addressed his representation to IOA president Dr. P. T. Usha and Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, urging that Dayne’s candidature be assessed on merit and within the prescribed Government eligibility criteria. His intervention comes as Goa celebrates the selection of Dayne’s sibling, Katya Coelho, for the 20th Asian Games in Women’s Windsurfing. Congratulating Katya on earning the prestigious honour, Tanavade noted that two Goans have now secured selection for the 2026 Games, with badminton player Tanisha Crasto, selected for the Mixed Doubles and Women’s Team events, being the other.

The Goa Olympic Association’s Annual General Meeting on August 25 had earlier passed a congratulatory motion recognising the achievements of both Katya and Tanisha. In Dayne’s case, Tanavade has also sought verification of withdrawal reports concerning Singapore’s Elkan Oh, whose ranking has a bearing on the present benchmark, and examination of the relevance of any Under-23 World Championship points in the ranking calculation before the final Indian contingent is determined.

INDIA DIG DEEP TO OVERCOME SYRIA IN AFC U20 ASIAN CUP QUALIFIERS OPENER

India made a scintillating start to their AFC U20 Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers campaign, defeating Syria 1-0 at the Do’stlik Stadium in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on Monday, August 31, 2026. Shami Singamayum scored the decisive goal in the 86th minute, finishing a fine move involving substitute Md Arbash to give the Blue Colts a winning start to their Group B campaign. It marked India's first-ever competitive win over Syria in the U19/U20 age group.

India were made to withstand sustained Syrian pressure for much of the contest but they never wavered. Mahesh Gawali’s side dropped deep, soaked it up and displayed impressive defensive organisation to record another clean sheet, their fifth in succession following four shutouts in their pre-qualifier friendlies.
Syria threatened from distance during the first half, with Alan Mamo testing India goalkeeper Suraj Singh Aheibam with a right-footed effort. Suraj responded with a critical save, parrying the ball behind for a corner. Abdulrahman Al Sarraj also tried his luck from outside the penalty area, but his attempt was collected comfortably by the confident Indian custodian.
Syria continued to push forward and nearly broke the deadlock from a set-piece shortly before half-time. Mamo floated a corner towards the far post, where a miscued Syrian volley fell invitingly for captain Belal Almooslee. His resulting header, however, missed the crossbar by inches.
The pressure continued after the restart. In the 58th minute, Al Sarraj cut the ball back for Mahmoud Alhasan, whose chipped attempt was kept out by the alert Suraj.
Syria went closer in the 73rd minute. Mamo delivered a cross from the left wing and substitute Ahmad Khalaf rose high to meet it, but his header struck the crossbar, offering India a much-needed reprieve.
With Syria having enjoyed the better of the attacking opportunities, Gawali turned to his bench in an effort to change the complexion of the game. Md Arbash, Prashan J**o and Gunleiba Wangkheirakpam were introduced as part of a triple substitution in the 79th minute, before Omang Dodum joined them four minutes later.
The changes shook things up and injected fresh energy into India’s attack. Seven minutes after coming on, Arbash played a crucial role in the move that decided the match. Shami orchestrated the attack by attempting to send the ball into the space behind the Syrian defence. When Alhasan slipped, Arbash reacted quickly and ran onto the loose ball inside the penalty area. He then cut it back towards Shami, who had continued his run into the box.
With no Syrian defender tracking him, Shami took full advantage of the space and time afforded to him, calmly slotting a fine left-footed finish into the back of the net. The goal sparked jubilant celebrations in the Indian dugout.
India remained composed during the closing stages to protect their slender advantage and complete a memorable victory.
The Blue Colts will next face Uzbekistan on September 3 at 19:30 IST.

KOLKATA: One of India's most influential sporting figure is Sourav Ganguly, the former captain of the Indian cricket team and former president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He said upcoming matches involving teams such as Brazil, Uruguay, and Panama present a valuable opportunity for Indian football players to compete against stronger international opponents if the game is to progress.
With teams such as Brazil, Uruguay and Panama set to come to India, Sourav Ganguly described the opportunity as a significant step towards giving Indian footballers much-needed exposure at the highest level. For someone who spent more than a decade representing India against the best teams in world cricket and later played a key role in shaping Indian cricket administration, Sourav Ganguly believes regular competition against superior opponents is crucial for a team's development. “It’s good. Why wouldn’t it be good to play football against big teams?” Sourav Ganguly said when asked about the importance of such international fixtures for Indian football.
However, the former India captain stressed that exposure to top teams should not remain limited to occasional matches or special events. According to him, Indian players need consistent opportunities throughout the year to test themselves against stronger opposition.
“This needs to happen throughout the year so that players get proper exposure. I always believe that playing against teams better than yourself helps improve your own game,” he said.
Drawing a comparison with cricket, Sourav Ganguly pointed to the importance of regularly competing against world-class opposition. Indian cricket's growth, he believes, has been shaped by the constant challenge of playing leading teams across different conditions and formats.
“Look at cricket, they play against top-quality teams all year round, which is why they get better. The same approach needs to be applied here,” he said.
The former captain also expressed hope that the All India Football Federation would continue on creating a stronger and more consistent international calendar for Indian football.
Coming from one of Indian sport's most respected voices, Sourav Ganguly's message carries particular weight. His belief is simple: Indian footballers can only raise their standards when they are regularly challenged by the best. Though he emphasises that this type of exposure needs to become a regular part of India's footballing journey, Sourav Ganguly views the visits of footballing powerhouses like Brazil and Uruguay as valuable opportunities.

DEMPO HSS EMERGE STATE CHAMPIONS IN SUBROTO MUKHERJEE UNDER-17 FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT 2026-27

BAMBOLIM: Vasantrao Dempo HSS came from two goals deficit to overcome the challenge of Damodar HSS Gudi-Quepem 4-2 on penalties to qualify for the Subroto Mukherjee Under-17 Football Tournament 2026-27 national round.

Teams shared six goals in the Regulation Time (3-3). Dempo trailed 0-2 inside 10 minutes and staged a superb fightback to head into half time interval with the match levelled at 2-2 at Atal Stadium. Vedansh Upadhyay (14th minute), Ashish Kunkolikar (26th minute) and Atharva Rane (35th minute) scored for Dempo. Bryson Dias (6th & 39th minutes), who was the outstanding forward on the day, and Amstrong Fernandes (9th minute) scored for Damodar HSS Gudi.

Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs conducted the State final under floodlights for the first time and both the finalists put up a befitting show as the talented youngsters played an attacking brand of football, bringing the National Sports Day to a rousing culmination.
