J&K Deputy Chief Minister visits family of slain youth in Jammu calls for impartial probe

Jammu, Jul 27 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, who on Sunday visited the house of a youth killed in police firing recently, called for an impartial inquiry into the incident.

He asked the senior police officers to fulfil promises made to the bereaved family, including Rs 35 lakh compensation and a job, and sought registration of a murder case against the erring personnel.

Parvez Ahmad (21), a Gujjar hailing from Nikki Tawi area of Jammu, was killed in a crossfire when police were allegedly chasing drug-peddlers in Satwari area on Thursday. Ahmad's killing has sparked protests by the community, with his family accusing the police of murdering an "innocent" man in a "staged" encounter.

A magisterial probe has already been ordered, while two policemen involved in the incident were suspended. An inquiry, headed by sub-divisional police officer of Jammu South, is also pending.

"This is a day light murder committed by the special branch of police in civilian clothes. Since police is under the administrative control of Lieutenant Governor, we request an impartial probe and stern action against the erring personnel," Choudhary told reporters after expressing his condolences to Parvez's family.

"Where is the Rs 35 lakh compensation and job letter promised to the family? Our police force is highly respected for its contribution in fighting terrorism. It has never harmed innocent people before. The Omar Abdullah government will not tolerate such incidents now," Choudhary said, adding that the matter was not over with the youth's funeral.

He asked who has given permission to armed policemen to roam in civilian clothes "like gangsters" and kill an "innocent" person, who was married only one-and-a-half months ago.

The deputy chief minister said he had heard that the family was involved in wrestling in an effort to keep local youths away from drugs.

SIA files chargesheet in 46 kg he**in seizure case in Jammu terror outfit LeT link exposed

Jammu, Jul 27 (PTI) The State Investigation Agency (SIA) has filed its first chargesheet in a narco-terror case involving the seizure of 46 kg of he**in in Jammu and Punjab in August last year, exposing the role of Pakistan-based proscribed outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), an official said on Sunday.

The case originated with the arrest of Sartaj Singh, a resident of Tarn Taran in Punjab, along with more than 33.580 kg of he**in from the Bus Stand area in Jammu, based on precise intelligence inputs on August 9 last year.

Swift follow-up investigation led to the identification of a second accused, Amritpal Singh alias Fouji, who initially escaped the scene with another consignment but was later arrested by Punjab Police, yielding an additional 12.626 kg of he**in.

Owing to the international dimensions and emerging terror linkages, the case was transferred to the SIA Jammu, and an investigation was taken up under the provisions of the NDPS Act and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

The SIA filed its first chargesheet before the competent court in the case, with investigations unearthing critical evidence connecting Amritpal Singh to a Pakistan-based handler affiliated with the LeT, establishing a direct narco-terrorism linkage, the official said.

He said the breakthrough was achieved through meticulously employed technical, scientific and human intelligence.

"The chargesheet substantiates grave offences under the NDPS Act and UAPA against the accused duo and other involved individuals, the official said.

"This case marks a major success for law enforcement in the fight against narcotics-fuelled terrorism and highlights the continuing threat posed by transnational criminal-terrorist syndicates exploiting drug trafficking routes to fund and support terror activities in the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and beyond," he said.(PTI)

Los Angeles wildfires: Death toll rises to 24

Los Angeles, Jan 13: The death toll from the ravaging wildfires in Los Angeles has risen to 24, local media reported.

Wildfires continued to rage through Los Angeles County, marking a catastrophic ‘Black Swan’ event of unprecedented scale in the history of the US’ most populous county.

Among the active fires, the Palisades Fire has burned through 19,978 acres (80.85 square km) with just six per cent containment as of Thursday night. Meanwhile, the Eaton Fire has scorched 13,690 acres (55.4 square km) and remains completely uncontained, Xinhua news agency reported.

For residents like Michael, an accountant in Altadena where the Eaton Fire erupted, the devastation has been life-altering. He was evacuated moments before his home was engulfed by flames.

“It’s like living through Armageddon,” he said, choking back tears. “We’ve lost everything.”

According to Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley, the wildfires, which began Tuesday night, rank among the county’s most destructive natural disasters. Over 10,000 buildings have been destroyed so far, primarily due to the Palisades and Eaton fires.

In Malibu, officials reported the first fatality from the Palisades Fire on Thursday. The cause of death remains under investigation. Malibu Mayor Doug Stewart expressed profound sorrow, offering condolences to the victim’s loved ones.

“This tragedy weighs heavily on our hearts,” he said.

Currently, firefighters are battling four major wildfires: Palisades Fire, Eaton Fire, Sunset Fire in the Hollywood Hills and Hurst Fire in Sylmar.

While some progress has been made in controlling the Eaton Fire, strong winds reaching 100 km per hour have made containing the Palisades Fire particularly challenging. Officials hope calmer weather conditions will improve containment efforts, though the National Weather Service has warned of critical fire weather persisting through Friday night.

The fires have forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents, with at least 70,000 homes under threat and 10,000 destroyed. Looting has been reported in some evacuation zones, leading to multiple arrests.

Dorothy, a retired school administrator who had lived in Pacific Palisades for 40 years, lost her home and everything in it. (Agencies)
