India has seen three major reforms launched on 1st July — each reshaping the way we live, work, and interact with the system.

1. Digital India (Launched on 1st July 2015):
Aimed at bridging the digital divide and empowering citizens through technology, Digital India introduced game-changing initiatives like JAM (Jan Dhan–Aadhaar–Mobile), BharatNet, DigiLocker, and e-Governance platforms.
It brought digital services to remote areas, made subsidies leak-proof through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), and enabled innovations like UPI — making India a global leader in digital payments.
However, issues like unequal access and data privacy challenges persist.

2. Goods and Services Tax (GST) – 1st July 2017:
GST replaced a complicated web of taxes with a unified structure across India. It simplified tax compliance, formalised the economy, and digitised tax processes through the GSTN portal and e-way bills.
While it helped reduce logistics costs and improve transparency, MSMEs initially struggled with compliance, and the multi-rate system remains complex.

3. Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) – 1st July 2024:
BNS replaced the colonial-era Indian Penal Code to make criminal laws more people-centric and modern.
It introduced reforms like FIRs from any police station, laws against mob lynching, community service for minor offences, and greater use of tech in trials.
Despite its progressive intent, there are concerns over implementation and possible misuse of digital tools.

From digital transformation to tax reform to legal overhaul — 1st July marks India’s journey from complexity to clarity, from legacy to innovation.

Join former Air India engineer InderjIt Singh as he delves into the perplexing crash of AI171. This isn't your typical engine failure story. With an aircraft heavily loaded, scorching temperatures, and highly experienced pilots, the 787 took off seemingly flawlessly... until both powerful GE engines abruptly went silent, without a whisper of smoke or sputtering. As a CritSit Manager, Singh reveals his compelling theory: not a double engine failure, but a catastrophic shutdown caused by an interruption in fuel supply due to a suspected, highly improbable failure of the B787's double and triple redundant hydraulic and electrical systems. Discover the critical clues, from the retracted landing gear attempt to the immediate RAT deployment, and why ECAM data might hold the ultimate confirmation. Prepare for a deep dive into aviation safety, redundancy, and the chilling possibilities that led to AI171's tragic end. This is a must-watch for anyone fascinated by the intricate world of aircraft systems and accident investigation.

During the mission, Jahnavi Dangeti will orbit Earth twice in just 5 hours, experience microgravity, and witness two sunrises and two sunsets. The mission is backed by Titan Space Technologies, with ₹50 lakh support from the Andhra Pradesh Government for her pilot training in Florida.

Her passion for space began early through science clubs, observatories, and hands-on experiments like model rocketry. She later pursued B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering at Lovely Professional University,

Jahnavi was chosen for the mission under Titan’s ASCAN (Astronaut Candidate) Program, after clearing medical, psychological, survival, and technical evaluations. Her strong background in STEM, analog astronaut training, and pilot certification played a key role. She will undergo 4 years of astronaut training in the USA from 2026, including orbital simulations, microgravity drills, spacecraft systems, and physical endurance modules.

She has also received the People’s Choice Award at NASA’s Space Apps Challenge and the Young Achiever Award at ISRO’s World Space Week.

But what’s next after this mission? While that is very unpredictable, but she may continue contributing to public and private space programs or take part in future orbital missions, join training or research roles, and play a key part in STEM outreach.

Anything is possible for her. However, Jahnavi has already left the mark as the first Indian to represent her nation in such a historic commercial space mission. In addition to aiming for space, she is paving the way for the next generation of scientists, researchers, and innovators as she embarks on this journey. For now, she is establishing herself as a pioneer, becoming the first in many groundbreaking pursuits.

In a deeply emotional farewell, Namakkal's transgender community bid goodbye to Dr. S Uma IAS, a woman they didn’t just see as an officer, but as one of their own.

Appointed as Namakkal District Collector in May 2023, Dr. Uma didn’t govern from an air-conditioned office — she walked among the people, especially those most often unheard. Her commitment went beyond administration; it was compassion in action.

At a special camp organised for transgender individuals, tears flowed freely as the community honoured her with holy water and viboothi—a heartfelt gesture of gratitude. “We’re losing a sister, not just a collector,” said Anusuya, a member of the community to TOI. Their eyes welled up as they recalled how Dr. Uma never turned them away—always ready to listen, always ready to help.

Now transferred as the Additional Secretary to the Deputy Chief Minister, Dr. Uma will oversee special schemes, but her legacy in Namakkal is etched in emotion and trust.

The first government doctor in Tamil Nadu to become an IAS officer under the special category, she also led the Chennai Covid War Room — but for many, her truest impact was felt in the quiet corners where dignity met humanity.

"Call me whenever you need help," she told them, her voice trembling.

And with that, she left not just an office, but a family that will always miss her.

On June 24, 2025, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) published its 10th edition of the Sustainable Development Report by economist Jeffery Sachs. It revealed that India has entered the top 100 of the global SDG Index for the first time, landing at 99th among 167 nations, based on a composite score of 67.

The SDGs were adopted in 2015 by 193 UN member states, but for now, 167 countries' data is available. It aims to address global challenges like poverty, health, education, climate action, and inequality by 2030. Parameters include metrics such as neonatal mortality (SDG 3), access to electricity (SDG 7), and press freedom (SDG 16), scored on a 0-100 scale. India’s progress has stood out, though challenges like inequality persist.

India has covered the journey from 121st in 2022 to 112th in 2023, 109th in 2024, and now 99th in 2025, marking its entry into the top 100. China sits at 49th, the US at 44th. India’s neighbours like Bhutan lead at 74th, Nepal at 85th, and Sri Lanka at 93rd, while Bangladesh (114th) and Pakistan (140th) lag behind. Bhutan and Nepal outperform India due to stronger scores in education, health, and governance. Meanwhile, India’s maritime neighbours Maldives is at 53, and Sri Lanka is at 93.

Nordic countries dominate, with Finland (1st), Sweden (2nd), Denmark (3rd), Germany (4th), and France (5th) leading the index. 19 out of the top 20 are European countries. Though they face challenges in climate and biodiversity goals due to high consumption and global supply chain impacts. Among G20 countries, Brazil (25th) ranks the highest, and Chile (7th) tops the OECD. while Barbados, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago are considered the most committed countries.

SDSN promotes sustainable development as a pathway to peace, equity, and well-being. No country is excluded from the SDG framework, emphasizing universal commitment. India’s top-100 status boosts its global reputation, attracts sustainable investments, and strengthens its voice in international sustainability discussions, paving the way for a resilient future.
