In the race to slow global warming, scientists have looked to the sea as an ally. As the planet’s most significant carbon sink, the ocean absorbs about a quarter of human-made CO₂ emissions. Proposals for marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) aim to accelerate this process, for example, by fertilising plankton or cultivating giant seaweed farms, to pull even more CO₂ out of the air. However, a new study warns that some popular ocean-based fixes could have an ominous side effect: exacerbating the ocean’s oxygen shortage.
