#1. Date of Signing
The Tripura Merger Agreement was signed on 9 September 1949 between the Maharani of Tripura and the Government of India.
#2. Date of Official Merger
Tripura officially became a part of India on 15 October 1949, marking the end of its status as a princely state.
#3. Signatories
The agreement was signed by Kanchan Prava Devi (Maharani of Tripura, acting as Regent) on behalf of the state and V.P. Menon on behalf of the Government of India.
#4. Reason for Merger
The merger took place after the death of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Debbarman in 1947. His son was a minor, so the Maharani acted as regent and decided to merge with India to ensure political stability and security.
#5. Accession to India
Tripura had initially signed the Instrument of Accession on 13 August 1947, allowing India to handle defense, external affairs, and communications. Full merger followed later in 1949.
#6. Becoming a ‘C’ Category State
After the merger, Tripura was administered as a Part ‘C’ state (under a Chief Commissioner appointed by the Government of India).
