Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Punjab today, conducting an aerial survey of flood-affected areas and holding review meetings in Gurdaspur and Pathankot to assess the damage. Before his visit, Modi stated that the central government stands shoulder-to-shoulder with flood victims. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann welcomed Modi's visit, hoping for a relief package announcement despite being unwell himself.
Modi announced ₹1,600 crore in additional financial assistance for Punjab, supplementing the ₹12,000 crore already allocated. The package includes support for housing, infrastructure, agriculture, and education, with ₹2 lakh ex gratia for deceased families and ₹50,000 for injured individuals. He also visited Himachal Pradesh, announcing ₹1,500 crore in aid for the state.
Political leaders across parties reacted to Modi's visit. Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar emphasized the Centre's support, saying "The Government of India is fully standing with Punjab". Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Vadra urged immediate and effective relief for affected communities. AAP MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer hoped for a special package, demanding ₹20,000 crore interim relief.
