South Asia Monitor A perspective on the region https://southasiamonitor.org/ South Asia is the region where one-fourth of the world’s population lives.

It is a melting pot of multiple ethnic, cultural and linguistic groupings with a long history of dynamic human interactions, territorial realignments, social and religious movements, cultural assimilations and ingrained economic exchanges. Though the region has been viewed, explained and explored through various perspectives, there has been a longstanding need to create a comprehensive resource ba

se on and for South Asia - not just for the eight countries that constitute it, but, more importantly, for the rest of the world which is increasingly drawn into its triumphs and travails. Until recently, there has not been a single comprehensive source that global policymakers can turn to for highly informed perspectives on South Asia. South Asia Monitor is a window to the region, the one-platform resouce of information, knowledge and debate on security, conflict management, diplomacy, culture and economy, among others, concerning the eight countries that comprise the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). South Asia Monitor is maintained and curated by SPS (www.spsindia.in)

Over the years, European societies have become more diverse, more open, and more global. Young people are growing up with different ideas about gender, religion, and identity. But not everyone feels comfortable with these changes. Some people feel like they are being left behind. They worry that their traditions and ways of life are disappearing.

In a media interview, Khandu strongly refuted Beijing’s territorial claims and emphasized Arunachal’s historical relationship with Tibet, a nation forcibly occupied by China in the 1950s. He pointed out that Arunachal Pradesh shares roughly 1,200 km of border with Tibet, around 100 km with Bhutan, and 550 km with Myanmar. His remarks were a pointed rebuttal to China’s repeated claims over Arunachal Pradesh, including renaming it as “Zangnan” or “South Tibet.”

The warm reception given to Pakistan's Army Chief in Washington is more than symbolic. It indicates Washington's strategic calculation—that India, despite its rhetoric, is becoming a more problematic partner. Washington, while not forsaking India, is hedging its bets. Its embrace of Pakistan is a backup plan.

One has to bear in mind that the two pilots, Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, 56, and First Officer Clive Kunder, 32, were very familiar with the aircraft. Captain Sabharwal had logged approximately 15,600 flight hours, including nearly 8,600 hours on the Boeing 787 and Kunder had around 3,400 flight hours, with over 1,100 hours on the 787. It is impossible to imagine that either of them was not fully knowledgeable that turning off and turning on fuel switches is a function that requires deliberate physical action.

UAE possesses specific advantages from an academic standpoint. It hosts branch campuses of several dozen top universities: New York University, for example, has its Abu Dhabi campus as a full-service liberal-arts university. France's Sorbonne University has a branch in Abu Dhabi. Britain's Heriot-Watt, University of Birmingham, Middlesex, and other Western universities have similarly invested heavily in UAE campuses.

Barely twenty years later, in 2023, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences officially accepted Tasveeri as an Oscar-qualifying film festival. It is so far the only South Asian film festival to be officially recognized as such. This means that Tasveer film festival winners become eligible for submissions to the Oscars.

India’s states play an outsized role in public spending accounting for nearly +/- 60% of total government expenditure. However, their fiscal health varies greatly across pan India. As someone closely observing both macroeconomic trends and grassroots governance models, I notice a growing divide between states that follow prudent fiscal practices and those still trapped in populist spending cycles.

When democracies embrace the traits of war economies and view peace as a sign of weakness, we need to question not about those who benefit from war, but rather about those who continue to engage in it. Not only does it include safety, but it also includes power, contracts, careers, and control.

Ultimately, the recruitment of 100,000 workers presents both opportunities and challenges for Bangladesh. If Bangladeshis can understand Japanese work culture, then it's truly a blessing; however, misunderstanding or violating it poses a risk to the hard-earned trust that has been established between the two Asian countries.
