222 Anganwadi Centres in Sikkim Operating from Rented Premises; 50 Approved for Construction
The Government of India has confirmed that a total of 222 Anganwadi Centres (AWCs) in Sikkim are currently operating from rented premises, with Gangtok district accounting for the highest number at 88 centres, followed by Namchi (53) and Pakyong (24). This data was revealed in response to an unstarred question raised by Dorjee Tshering Lepcha in the Rajya Sabha on July 30, 2025.
Responding to the question, the Minister of State in the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Savitri Thakur, stated that the central government aims to construct 50,000 AWC buildings across India over five years, with 10,000 buildings per year, under Mission Poshan 2.0 and in convergence with the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).
As per the government’s revised cost norms, each Anganwadi Centre will be constructed at a cost of Rs. 12 lakh, funded jointly through MGNREGS (Rs. 8 lakh), 15th Finance Commission or other untied funds (Rs. 2 lakh), and Women and Child Development Ministry (Rs. 2 lakh), with the cost shared between the Centre and the States/UTs.
For Sikkim, 50 AWCs have been approved for construction during the financial years 2023-24 and 2024-25, and a total of Rs. 90 lakh has been released for the same.
