The Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) in Assam is introducing space education in schools, with 15 institutions now equipped with dedicated laboratories under the Bodoland Space Education Programme. On August 23, Tamulpur Higher Secondary School inaugurated the Haladhar Ujir Memorial Space Laboratory during its first-ever National Space Day celebration, becoming the latest to join the initiative. The programme, supported by Vyomika Space Academy and aligned with ISRO, began in July 2024 at Sidli-Kashikotra Higher Secondary School in Chirang—the first such facility in Northeast India.

These space labs feature telescopes, PSLV/GSLV models, CanSat payload kits, and experiments with sensors, propulsion, and telemetry. Over 3,000 students have already participated in activities such as water-propelled rocket building and learning orbital mechanics, bringing theory to life through hands-on learning.

The initiative is a dream project of BTC Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro, who hopes to boost STEM learning among rural students and encourage scientific curiosity. Each lab is named after a respected educator or community leader to instill pride and ownership, such as Sidli-Kashikotra’s lab named after late journalist Chino Basumatary.

Teachers and parents say the programme is transforming young minds. Students now express ambitions of becoming space scientists and eagerly discuss topics like black holes and supernovas, while parents feel their children are reaching beyond traditional classroom boundaries into the cosmos.

The death of Pompy Baruah in front of the emergency ward of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Sunday has created a sensational situation in the city.

Police have alleged that the incident is a case of drug overdose, while family members suspect it to be murder.

Meanwhile, Paltan Bazar Police arrested Imran Ali alias Muktar Ali, and during interrogation, several crucial details emerged from his mobile phone. According to police sources, the data indicates the supply of young women to multiple luxury hotels in Guwahati.

Investigations further revealed that Pompy had spent Saturday night at a rehab centre in Hengrabari. On Sunday morning, she was supposed to return to her hometown in Nagaon. However, how she ended up in a rented house in Islampur remains a key question for the police.

Moreover, the identity of the person with whom she allegedly consumed drugs is yet to be established.

The sudden death of Imran Hussain, President of Kulicherra Rajnagar Gaon Panchayat, turned into a sensational case after police uncovered a shocking murder plot. On August 10, Hussain collapsed and died soon after having dinner, and his family members initially believed it to be a heart attack. However, doubts grew when relatives noticed the unusual conduct of his wife, Rina Begum, and their driver, Biju Ahmed.

Suspicion deepened after some of Hussain’s close friends detained Biju and checked his mobile phone, where they discovered WhatsApp chats between him and Rina that pointed towards a planned crime. They immediately informed the police, who took both Rina and Biju into custody. During interrogation, both reportedly confessed to the murder, confirming that Hussain’s dismissal of Biju—after learning about his illicit affair with Rina—had led them to plan the killing.

According to police, Biju admitted he had plotted Hussain’s death to acquire wealth. On the night of the incident, he bought poison and handed it to Rina, who secretly mixed it with her husband’s food, leading to his death. Along with the couple, Rina’s father, younger brother, and sister were also arrested for their suspected role in the crime, making the case even more disturbing for the local community.

A fresh incident of journalist harassment was reported in Dhekiajuli on Wednesday night, when two reporters were allegedly assaulted by the owner of Vishnu Jyoti Super Speciality Hospital.

According to reports, Prag News correspondent Diganta Sharma and NB News journalist Pankaj Mahato had visited the hospital around 9 PM to investigate allegations that an unqualified individual was providing medical treatment on the premises. During their visit, hospital owner Dr Ranjit Pathak allegedly abused the journalists verbally and then physically attacked them. Sharma reportedly sustained injuries to his chest, while both journalists also suffered blows to the face.

The injured journalists subsequently lodged an FIR against Dr Pathak at the Dhekiajuli police station.

This is not the first time the hospital owner has come under controversy. Nearly a year ago, Dr Pathak faced public outrage after being accused of making inappropriate advances toward a nurse while allegedly under the influence of alcohol. The issue had triggered strong protests from various organizations and was widely covered by the media.

Wednesday night’s incident is being viewed as a continuation of hostility against the press, with many suggesting it may have been an act of retaliation for past media coverage. Meanwhile, the Dhekiajuli Press Club on Thursday convened an emergency meeting to discuss the issue and to take future course of action and strongly condemned the incident.

In an unfortunate event, two youths drowned in the Brahmaputra River on Thursday evening during the immersion of a Manasa Devi idol in Tinsukia district. The victims have been identified as Siba Boraik (18) of Chirapatty and Sanjay Choudhary (20) of Makum.

According to eyewitnesses, they were swept away by strong currents while helping in the ritual at a local ghat. Personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local police conducted a search operation. After several hours, the bodies were recovered and sent for post-mortem examination at Tinsukia Civil Hospital. The remains have been handed over to the families.

Authorities have urged caution during river-based rituals. A district official stated that necessary measures would be taken to ensure safety at immersion sites, including deployment of rescue boats and life jackets.

Four years after the shocking murder of college student Nandita Saikia, the Dhemaji District and Sessions Court has sentenced Rintu Sarma to death. Rintu Sarma, a Grade IV employee at Moridhal College, was convicted for brutally attacking Nandita with a machete near the Dhemaji bus stand on August 21, 2021.

Nandita, who was returning home with her friend Kashmina Dutta and her father, sustained severe injuries in the attack. Despite being shifted to a nursing home in Dibrugarh, she succumbed on August 25, 2021, while the other two victims also suffered serious injuries.

Judge Ajay Faglu called the case one of the “rarest of rare” and held that life imprisonment would not meet the ends of justice. The court sentenced Sarma to death under IPC Sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), and 324 (causing hurt with dangerous weapons).

Nandita’s father and her friend Kashmina expressed relief at the verdict, calling it justice after a long four-year wait. They hoped the judgment would serve as a warning so that such crimes are not repeated in the future.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday announced that the state will temporarily stop issuing Aadhaar cards to persons above 18 years of age, except those belonging to Scheduled Tribes (ST), Scheduled Castes (SC) and tea garden workers.

Linking the decision to border security and concerns over illegal immigration, Sarma said, “We have continuously pushed back Bangladeshi nationals along the border. We want to take protection that no one (illegal foreigner) can obtain Aadhaar card from Assam by entering into the state and claim to be an Indian citizen. We have completely closed that way.”

He announced the decision after Assam cabinet meeting, saying, “Assam cabinet has today decided that Aadhaar card will not be issued for persons above 18 years of age, except ST, SC and tea garden workers, for another one year.”

Himanta Sarma added that people from other communities who are yet to get Aadhaar will be given a final chance to apply in September. “We will allow them to apply within the month of September,” he said.

He said only a one-month window will be available in September for people above 18 years of age who have not yet enrolled for an Aadhaar card.

The chief minister further clarified that beyond this window, Aadhaar enrolment will be subject to strict scrutiny. “In rare and rarest case, the District Commissioner will be the authority to issue Aadhaar card after completion of the window period and the DC will have to check SB report, Foreigners Tribunal report before issuing Aadhaar card,” Sarma said.

The health department confirmed a cholera outbreak in Dibrugarh district, identifying two confirmed cases and several suspected cases.

Dr Trishna Borah, Joint Director of Health Services in Dibrugarh, during a press briefing on Wednesday, said that the outbreak had been traced to the Pucca Line of Dinjoy tea estate in Chabua and Gazal Basti near Duliajan.

“There are two confirmed cholera cases based on tests from patient samples. As a result, we are treating all individuals presenting symptoms as likely cholera cases, although some may actually be suffering from gastroenteritis or diarrhea,” Dr Borah said.

Laboratory tests have confirmed high bacterial contamination in the tubewells of Paka Line, which have since been sealed. The area has also been declared under quarantine.

In view of the situation, the health department has issued an alert through the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) in the affected areas of the district, while health teams have been deployed to carry out strict surveillance and preventive measures.

Intensive Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities, including awareness campaigns through miking and interpersonal communication (IPC), are also being undertaken in both the affected areas.
