It's the birthday of Alan Turing, who was born in 1912 in London. Turing studied mathematics at Cambridge and Princeton, where he worked on computational logic. In 1938, one year before Germany invaded Poland, Turing joined Government Communications Headquarters to work part-time on analyzing Germany's Enigma codes. Breaking the codes was team effort. Turing's main contribution was in pioneering the use of statistical analysis carried out by computers, which he designed. After World War II, Turing became interested in artificial intelligence. In his 1950 paper, "Computing Machinery and Intelligence," he described the properties of practical AI and his famous test. Before his untimely death in 1954, Turing was working on the mathematical basis of the formation of zebra stripes, limb configurations and other biological patterns. His theory of how a set of chemical reactions could produce such patterns was vindicated earlier this year.

Each thud of a hiker’s heel releases enough energy to illuminate a light bulb. Rather than waste that power, Matt Stanton, an engineer and avid backpacker, created a shoe insole that stores it as electricity.
