A small amount of a death cap mushroom contains enough toxin to cause significant health complications. The toxins specifically impact the liver and kidneys, potentially resulting in irreparable harm and organ failure. In some situations, a liver transplant may be necessary.
Signs of poisoning:
Symptoms may emerge 6-24 hours after ingestion, and can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps.
A temporary improvement in symptoms might occur after initial discomfort, but the toxins continue to affect the liver and kidneys.
Indications of liver and kidney damage typically appear 3-6 days after consuming the mushrooms.
If you suspect someone has ingested a wild mushroom, please seek immediate emergency medical care. Do not delay, even if symptoms haven't appeared. Early intervention is essential. Bring a sample of the mushroom to the hospital for identification. You may also want to contact your local Poison Information Centre.
