Illegal Occupation of Government Land and Quarters in Yingkiong: A Growing Threat to Public Assets

Yingkiong, the serene and strategically important town nestled in Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Siang district, is facing a silent crisis—the illegal occupation of government land and residential quarters. The unauthorized encroachments have increasingly emerged as a serious obstacle to governance, fairness, and public service delivery. In Yingkiong, several government quarters and govt. land are reportedly occupied by individuals.

Additionally, instances of encroachment on government land have surfaced, especially near market areas and road expansions, where individuals or groups build temporary or semi-permanent structures without legal authorization. In some cases, influential persons use their connections to protect these illegal holdings. Such occupation should not be practiced in the coming future.

The District Administration of Upper Siang must take this matter seriously. Timely surveys, strict enforcement of eviction laws, and transparent allocation mechanisms are crucial to curbing this growing problem. Citizens, too, must cooperate and refrain from supporting or engaging in such practices. Responsible use of public resources is key to ensuring equitable development and maintaining public trust in government systems.

If immediate and sustained action is taken now, Yingkiong can set an example for other districts by demonstrating that public land is for public use—not private gain.

Gette Village, Arunachal Pradesh —
Under the soft glow of village lights and the cheers of an enthusiastic crowd, the grounds of Gette village came alive with one of the most spirited events of the Holung festival: the traditional tug of war. Far from being just a physical contest, this event embodied the unity, culture, and heritage of the local community.

Held annually, the Holung festival is a significant cultural celebration for the people of Gette village. It serves as a time for reunion, reflection, and rejoicing—honoring both the ancestral traditions and the bonds of the present community. Among the various festivities, from rituals to shared meals and storytelling, the tug of war has earned a special place in everyone’s hearts.

What makes this game particularly unique is the use of jungle rope—a sturdy, natural vine-like rope sourced directly from the surrounding forests. This rope is more than just a tool; it’s a symbol of the village’s connection to nature and its reliance on traditional methods.

The tug of war teams are often made up of local men and women grouped by neighborhood or clan, making the competition a matter of both pride and camaraderie. Onlookers cheer on their friends and relatives with booming voices and infectious laughter. Though the game is physically intense—with bare feet digging into the earth and muscles straining with every pull—the atmosphere remains joyful and respectful.

To further elevate the spirit of the event, villagers often break into traditional Holung folk songs, sung in rhythm with the pull of the rope.
