Historic Milestone in Kirkuk: Mohammed Saman Agha Elected as Governor
In a landmark decision for the region’s political landscape, Mohammed Saman Agha, Chairman of the Iraqi Turkmen Front (ITC) and the United Iraqi Turkmen Front list, has been officially elected as the Governor of Kirkuk. The appointment was finalized during today’s session of the Kirkuk Provincial Council following the formal resignation of the previous governor, Rebwar Taha. This leadership transition is being hailed as a historic turning point, marking the first time in 86 years that a Türkmen has held the governorship of the city.
The historical significance of this appointment stretches back to the post-Ottoman era; the lineage of Türkmen governors began in 1920 with Fattah Pasha, followed by leaders such as Abdülmecid Yakubi and Ömer Nazmi Neftçi, concluding in 1940 with Abdülhamit Abdülmecid. Since then, the city has waited nearly nine decades to see a Türkmen representative return to this office. Regional leaders, including Minister Maruf, have extended their congratulations, describing the election of Governor Agha as a "historic step" that honors the city's diverse heritage and administrative legacy.
