Historic Milestone in Kirkuk: Mohammed Saman Agha Elected as Governor

In a landmark decision for the region’s political landscape, Mohammed Saman Agha, Chairman of the Iraqi Turkmen Front (ITC) and the United Iraqi Turkmen Front list, has been officially elected as the Governor of Kirkuk. The appointment was finalized during today’s session of the Kirkuk Provincial Council following the formal resignation of the previous governor, Rebwar Taha. This leadership transition is being hailed as a historic turning point, marking the first time in 86 years that a Türkmen has held the governorship of the city.

The historical significance of this appointment stretches back to the post-Ottoman era; the lineage of Türkmen governors began in 1920 with Fattah Pasha, followed by leaders such as Abdülmecid Yakubi and Ömer Nazmi Neftçi, concluding in 1940 with Abdülhamit Abdülmecid. Since then, the city has waited nearly nine decades to see a Türkmen representative return to this office. Regional leaders, including Minister Maruf, have extended their congratulations, describing the election of Governor Agha as a "historic step" that honors the city's diverse heritage and administrative legacy.

Arshat Salihi: The post of vice president should be given to the Turkmen

Arshat Salihi, the Iraqi Turkmen Front (ITF) Member of Parliament for Kirkuk, has called for the allocation of key positions, including executive ministries and a vice presidency, to the Turkmen community in the upcoming government.

Speaking at a press briefing following his swearing-in ceremony at the Iraqi Council of Representatives, Salihi emphasized that the Iraqi Turkmen Front would continue to champion the rights of Turkmens in the new legislative term. He explicitly demanded that the Turkmen community be represented in the cabinet with an executive ministry.

Noting that the Iraqi Constitution permits the appointment of three vice presidents, Salihi stated that they would launch a concerted effort to ensure one of these posts is assigned to the Turkmens, whom he described as the country’s "third essential component."

Gulsel Mohammed, another ITF representative for Kirkuk who secured a seat in parliament, also remarked that the bloc would adopt a new strategic approach to ensure the Turkmen voice is effectively heard in Baghdad.
