After a long pause, the Arctic Portal is delighted to reopen its Young Arctic Researchers (YAR) & Features section, a dedicated space for sharing insights, ideas, and reflections from the next generation of Arctic scholars and professionals.

We warmly welcome submissions from young scientists, students, and early-career professionals working on Arctic or climate-related topics.
If you have an article, field reflection, or research insight to share, we would be happy to feature your work on the Arctic Portal.org and help bring your perspective to a global audience.

To submit, simply contact us at [email protected] with your article and a short author bio.

Fifty years after the first women’s strike in 1975, Icelandic women are once again taking a stand. Today’s strike is a reminder, progress must be protected, renewed, and shared.
👉When women stop, the world pays attention.
👉When we stand together, everything moves forward.

Iceland’s clean energy story is evolving.
The island already runs almost entirely on hydropower and geothermal, but now it is testing the power of the wind. 🌬️

A new project, Búrfellslundur, could bring 28 turbines and over 120 MW to Iceland’s grid by 2027. Supporters say it adds resilience and could power future green hydrogen production. Critics worry about impacts on tourism and untouched landscapes.

Around the world, wind is booming — with more than 1.1 terawatts installed and a record year in 2024. Can Iceland find the right balance?

⚡ What do you think — should Iceland add wind to its renewable mix?

🌍 In Alaska, rivers are turning bright orange.
Why? Thawing permafrost is exposing ancient rocks that release acids and metals into the water.

⚠️ This discoloration is not just cosmetic, it is harming fish, insects, and ecosystems. Some metals reach levels toxic for aquatic life.

It is a vivid reminder of how climate change reshapes the Arctic in unexpected, and alarming, ways.

🌊❄️ Arctic Algae Defy Extreme Cold ❄️🌊

Scientists at Stanford have discovered that microscopic algae (diatoms) can move inside Arctic sea ice at −15 °C — the coldest movement ever recorded in living cells! 🧊✨

🔬 Long thought to be trapped and inactive, these tiny organisms were observed gliding through ice using special microscopes during an Arctic expedition.

🌍 Why it matters:
Ice algae are the foundation of the Arctic food web. They feed zooplankton like copepods and krill → which sustain fish → which feed seals, whales, and ultimately even polar bears. 🐟🦭🐋🐻‍❄️

In other words, the survival of the Arctic’s largest predators depends on the resilience of its smallest organisms. 💚

The Gulf Stream, one of Earth’s most powerful ocean currents, is at risk of collapsing. 🌊 Scientists now warn the tipping point could be closer than we think, with consequences for Europe, the tropics, and the global climate system. ❄️🔥🌍

Cutting emissions is the only way to reduce the risk.

✨ The Arctic Tern – the world’s greatest traveler! ✨

Did you know the Arctic Tern migrates from pole to pole each year? 🌍
This remarkable bird breeds in the Arctic during summer, then flies all the way to Antarctica to catch the southern summer — experiencing two summers every year. ☀️❄️

🛫 Their southward journey takes about 3 months, with strategic “fuel stops” along the way.
💨 The return north is faster — sometimes just 40 days with favorable winds!
🥚 They nest in colonies, laying 1–3 eggs, and fiercely defend their chicks.
🌊 They live off small fish and krill, hovering and plunge-diving to catch prey.
⏳ Some Arctic Terns live up to 30 years, flying more than 2 million kilometers in their lifetime — that’s like flying to the moon and back… three times! 🚀

At Arctic Portal, we have chosen the Arctic Tern as our symbol because it represents endurance, global connection, and knowledge without borders. 🌐

➡️ Swipe through to discover their epic migration, breeding cycle, and why this bird embodies our mission.
