The Museum’s proud history
Nuuk Art Museum was a gift from Svend and Helene Junge Pedersen to the people of Nuuk. It opened in 2005 and is found in the former Adventist church, a few minutes walk from the centre of Nuuk. The gift included a collection of art from Greenland, collected by the couple. While the museum started as a private enterprise, it is currently operated by the municipality.

Nuuk Art Museum displays the rich artistic history of Greenland’s artists The Nuuk Art Museum is an integral part of cultural life in Nuuk, as it hosts a permanent exhibition, pop-ups and special events throughout the year. “I would say the art scene is quite vibrant here”, said Hanne Kirkegaa...

One could ask why people choose to live in such a land. Science relates that people have lived here for more than 4000 years and that some populations disappeared and others moved in. It is speculated that the hunt after game provides the reason for the habitations. Those that continued their journey to Greenland from the Canadian side arrived in a land that was surrounded by ocean.

Once I heard a person not born in Greenland tell that Australia was the world’s largest island and its population was proud of it. Not so strange because a globe shows that the country appears to be an island. However, Greenlanders do not agree with that opinion because in geography classes in sch...

Lífið í landinu er loksins að færast í rétta átt. Arctic Circle, ráðstefnan sem haldin er þessa dagana í Hörpu, er ein stærsta ráðstefna sem haldin hefur verið á Íslandi eftir Covid lokanir og samkomutakmörkunum var aflétt. Í ár eru rúmlega 3000 gestir frá 70 löndum sem koma á ráðstefnuna. Tæplega 900 manns halda þarna erindi um allt milli himins og jarðar, sem snertir þetta viðkvæma, víðfema og strálbyggða svæðis sem við köllum norðurslóðir. Formaður Arctic Circle, er fyrrverandi forseti lýðveldisins, herra Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson. Arctic Circle verður haldin dagana 13 til 16 október á næsta ári í Reykjavík.

After all, these countries have so much to offer. Incredibly diverse nature that always comes as a surprise. Good accommodation, world-class food, and varied and beautiful societies.

Eventyrland for turister

Pétur Ásgeirsson, aðalræðismaður Íslands í Nuuk, segir að margir álíti a...

Greenland is the world’s largest island and hosts many geological environments. Even though over 80 percent of the country is covered by ice there is a mosaic of mountain types in coastal areas where everything from the oldest mountains in the world to younger types are located. The oldest are found near Nuuk and are approximately 4 billion years old. Considering that the earth has been dated at approximately 5 billion years of age, the mountain types near Nuuk can be considered to be the remains of the earliest continents.

By passing the Nature Protection Law, Greenland’s Home Rule Government has thus established a number of instruments to protect its mammals and birds. If required the Home Rule Government can protect a species or establish hunting quotas and hunting seasons, prohibit hunting or other activities or even deny access to a particular area during a chosen period, all with the intention of at minimum meeting the demands of the signed conventions.

Whether with the United Nations, or with Arctic or Nordic collaborators, Greenland’s Home Rule government participates actively in the international dialog on environmental issues Greenland has joined a number of international conventions related to the environment including the Convention on Biol...
