LABOUR (CHILDBIRTH)

🔹 Definition

Labour is the natural process by which a baby is delivered from the uterus through the birth canal. It involves regular uterine contractions that lead to the opening (dilation) of the cervix and the birth of the baby and placenta.

⸻

🔹 Signs of Labour

Labour may begin with the following signs:

* Regular, painful uterine contractions
* Lower back pain or abdominal cramps
* “Show” (passage of mucus plug mixed with blood)
* Rupture of membranes (water breaking)
* Progressive cervical dilation and effacement

⸻

🔹 Stages of Labour

🟢 First Stage (Cervical Dilation)

This stage begins with the onset of regular contractions and ends when the cervix is fully dilated (10 cm).

Phases:

* Latent phase: Slow dilation (0–4 cm)
* Active phase: Faster dilation (4–10 cm)

Key features:

* Contractions become stronger and closer
* Cervix thins (effaces) and opens

⸻

🔵 Second Stage (Delivery of the Baby)

Starts when the cervix is fully dilated and ends with the birth of the baby.

Key features:

* Strong urge to push
* Baby moves down the birth canal
* Crowning (baby’s head becomes visible)

⸻

🟡 Third Stage (Delivery of the Placenta)

Occurs after the baby is born until the placenta is expelled.

Key features:

* Mild contractions continue
* Placenta separates and is delivered
* Usually lasts 5–30 minutes

⸻

🔹 Types of Labour

* Spontaneous labour: Begins naturally
* Induced labour: Started medically (e.g., medications)
* Augmented labour: Strengthened if contractions are weak

⸻

🔹 Pain Management in Labour

* Breathing and relaxation techniques
* Support from a birth partner
* Medications (e.g., epidural anesthesia)

⸻

🔹 Possible Complications

* Prolonged labour
* Fetal distress
* Excessive bleeding (postpartum hemorrhage)
* Obstructed labour

⸻

🔹 Care During Labour

* Monitoring contractions and fetal heart rate
* Checking cervical dilation
* Providing emotional and physical support
* Maintaining hygiene and comfort

⸻

🔹 After Labour (Postpartum)

* Monitoring mother for bleeding
* Initiating breastfeeding
* Observing the baby’s breathing and temperature
