A CALL TO OUR FILIPINO GEOSCIENTISTS: What Is The True Price of Reclamation?

From the 660 hectares of Bay City to MOA and Aseana, we have already reclaimed hundreds of hectares. Now, PRA itself confirms 14 APPROVED projects totaling 5,503 hectares. DENR says the total proposal is 6,166 hectares of new land — almost the size of Manila + Marikina combined. The master plan? Over 20,000 hectares.
Hundreds of square kilometers of sea, turned into land. For whom? For casinos, condos, and business districts that will pave the way for so-called modern urbanization.
My question is simple: Ano ang kapalit?
I am calling on our Filipino geoscientists — from UP NIGS, UP MSI, PHIVOLCS, DOST, and our state universities. Pag-aralan ninyo ito. Independently.
We need science, not developer-funded compliance reports.
1. BAHA. Manila Bay is where 17 river systems drain. Oceanographers already warned that reclamation "significantly disrupt the natural circulation of water in Manila Bay." If we narrow the bay, where will the floodwater go during the next super typhoon? Malabon? Navotas? Bulacan?
2. LINDOL. Reclaimed land is not bedrock. It is sand and silt pumped from the seabed. Manila sits beside the Valley Fault System. What happens when the Big One hits and this new land liquefies?
3. KABUHAYAN. Manila Bay is one of our most productive fishing grounds. Every hectare we reclaim is a hectare of fishing ground, mangrove, and marine life we bury forever.
No one is against progress. But progress should not benefit only a few business owners while the risk is passed on to millions of coastal Filipinos.
Before we celebrate P23 Trillion worth of reclaimed property, let our scientists answer first: KAKAYANIN BA NG LUPA?
The sea does not negotiate. It obeys physics. Let's listen to our scientists before the next flood teaches us the lesson.

Come and join the celebration of a trailblazer in the field of cartooning at Larry Alcala’s centennial exhibition from August 19 to September 19, 2026 at the Gallery 2 of the Metropolitan Theater in Ermita, Manila. The exhibit is open and free to the public.

Oggi, 10 agosto, è stato firmato alla Farnesina il Protocollo di modifica dell’Accordo tra Italia e Filippine per la conversione delle patenti di guida. La firma rappresenta un importante passo avanti nel facilitare la mobilità e la vita quotidiana dei cittadini italiani e filippini nei rispettivi Paesi e conferma la solidità delle relazioni bilaterali e i profondi legami di amicizia che uniscono i due Paesi.

Today, August 10, the protocol amending the agreement between Italy and the Philippines on the conversion of driving licences was signed at the Farnesina.
The signing represents an important step forward in facilitating the mobility and everyday lives of Italian and Filipino citizens in each other’s countries, while reaffirming the strength of bilateral relations and the deep bonds of friendship between the two countries.
