A Firenze c’è un diavolo (piccolissimo) in mezzo alla strada.

Se cammini per il centro, all’incrocio tra Via degli Strozzi e Via de’ Vecchietti, alza lo sguardo… anzi, no: abbassalo. Quasi calpestato da turisti e motorini, c’è un piccolo diavolo di bronzo a cavallo. Opera niente meno che del Giambologna.

La storia? Nel 1245, il monaco domenicano Pietro da Verona stava predicando nell’attuale Piazza della Repubblica quando, all’improvviso, apparve un cavallo nero inferocito tra la folla. Il monaco riconobbe subito il Maligno, fece un segno di croce… e il cavallo sparì dietro l’angolo di Palazzo Vecchietti, lasciando solo un forte odore di zolfo.

Per ricordare il miracolo, Bernardo Vecchietti commissionò al Giambologna questa piccola scultura. Oggi è lì, silenziosa, tra smog e selfie.

Firenze è piena di segreti così: dettagli che non vedresti mai da solo, storie che nemmeno le guide raccontano.

There's a tiny devil right in the middle of a street in Florence. 👹

If you're walking through the city center, at the intersection of Via degli Strozzi and Via de' Vecchietti, look up… actually, no: look down. Almost trampled by tourists and scooters, there's a small bronze devil on horseback. A work by none other than Giambologna.

The story? In 1245, the Dominican monk Pietro da Verona was preaching in what is now Piazza della Repubblica when suddenly a furious black horse appeared among the crowd. The monk recognized the Evil One, made the sign of the cross… and the horse vanished around the corner of Palazzo Vecchietti, leaving behind nothing but a strong smell of sulfur.

To commemorate the miracle, Bernardo Vecchietti commissioned Giambologna to create this small sculpture. Today it sits there, silent, amidst smog and selfies.

Florence is full of secrets like this: details you would never notice on your own, stories that even tour guides don't tell.
