I shot THE COST OF BREAD in my maternal grandparents’ first home after marriage, which my Nonno built, and where my mother was born & lived the first portion of her childhood. That’s where this story emerged - a dramatization of something my mom experienced.

Everything in this scene - except our costumes - is original! We only used one artificial light source, to supplement the candlelight and the one bare electric bulb hanging from the ceiling below the rafter, which my Nonno had installed in his “modern” home.

I had a dialect consultant on hand during filming- a woman born in the village who spoke the “ancient” dialect: the version my grandparents spoke & what I soeak with my parents and relatives, slightly different from the contemporary dialect I speak with my friends and younger petiole when I go back.
