Sun hat, striped dress and a summer outing to the cemetery. What could be more normal?

While everyone else was heading to the beach, I visited Genoa’s Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno looking for two unexpected pieces of music history.

In 1978, French photographer Bernard Pierre Wolff photographed two funerary monuments here: the Ribaudo family tomb, sculpted by Onorato Toso, and the Appiani family tomb, created by Demetrio Paernio.

His photographs later appeared on the sleeve of the 12-inch edition of Love Will Tear Us Apart and on the cover of Closer by Joy Division.

The artwork for Closer had already been chosen before Ian Curtis died. When the album was released on 18 July 1980, two months after his death, the image inevitably took on an even more haunting meaning.

Two monuments created to preserve private memories became two of the most iconic images in post-punk history.

So yes, I went to Genoa in full summer mode and ended up looking for Manchester in a cemetery.

Hidden in the Temple Bar district (Curved Street), this interactive museum takes you behind the scenes of Ireland’s rock history. Through guided tours, you’ll discover stories, memorabilia and recording spaces linked to iconic artists such as Thin Lizzy, U2, The Cranberries, Rory Gallagher, The Boomtown Rats and many more.

Dublin’s soundtrack is much louder than you might expect.
