“I curate exhibitions as a form of montage.”

French curator, researcher, and broadcaster, Julia Marchand moved to Venice in 2025. After working at the Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles from 2015 to 2023, she left the institution to pursue an independent path already initiated in 2016 with Extramentale, an “underground” curatorial platform through which, for ten years, she supported a generation of emerging artists while investigating marginality and adolescence as a cultural condition.

Giancarlo and Sandra Bonollo operate in the world of contemporary art with a curious and attentive gaze, always in search of new languages and emerging artists. Their experience is no longer limited to private collecting, but translates into a concrete dialogue with the local area and the public through their Foundation in Thiene.

In this interview, they discuss the choices, insights, and challenges that have shaped their activity, offering a glimpse into Italian art collecting and the possibilities of making it a shared experience.

Until 31 July 2026, the Archivio di Stato in Venice will be open to the public, hosting a photographic exhibition by Dayanita Singh. A living, ever-evolving archive, it brings together photographs taken by the artist in archives – and elsewhere – over the last ten years.

The exhibition comprises a body of photographs taken in Bologna, Como, Florence, Venice, Rome, Naples and Palermo, featuring portraits of the respective cities’ archives, viewed from both the outside and the inside.

“We cannot think of writing architectural history in a traditional or self-referential way; rather, we must investigate where the need to preserve memory, study history, and safeguard materials in physical archives comes from.”

Starting from the success of the project “Forgotten Architecture” and reaching back to the roots of her research, this conversation with Bianca Felicori explores the key points of her work, situated at the intersection of architecture, art, and life. Embracing the radical legacy, her practice becomes a medium of inquiry and intervention for the present time, connecting architecture with social and cultural issues.

Among the many exhibitions to visit in Venice during the Biennale, Amar Kanwar’s debut and the most complete Italian retrospective in recent years dedicated to Michael Armitage, hosted at Palazzo Grassi, are not to be missed.

Palazzo Grassi, the Venetian venue of the Pinault Collection, is hosting, until 10 January 2027, the works by Michael Armitage and Amar Kanwar exploring conflict, human memory and sensitive socio-cultural and political issues. A narrative centred on the violent implications of power, expressed through a universal perspective that becomes a collective voice.

«I have always viewed curating exhibitions as an act of authorship, and when a curatorial project has a strong authorial dimension, it is often interpreted as a gesture of vanity, as an attempt to overshadow the artist or the works. From my perspective, this is not the case at all: the starting point is always the artist and their work».

First a curator at the Kunsthalle Wien, then artistic director of MACRO – The Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome until early 2025, Luca Lo Pinto has always combined publishing with curating, adopting a free and open approach that embraces misinterpretation.

The pressing issue of access to water lies at the heart of the solo exhibition by Ana Silva at GAMeC in Bergamo.

Installed in Spazio Zero, the show curated by Lorenzo Giusti brings together two new series of textile works: Agua (2024-25) and Guardiãs (2024-25), which engage in dialogue with the earlier series O Fardo / Vestir Memórias (2023).

Through the language of embroidery, the artist denounces the scarcity of a resource essential to survival, particularly in contexts where it is not a right but a privilege. In this light, Silva depicts landscapes that trace the geography of her own biography: from Angola, her country of birth, to Portugal and Brazil.
