GMF2 performs better than CCIR in reproducing ionosphere climatology across most of the conditions examined in the study.
The research compares three 2D models — GMF2, GMF2cor and CCIR — using ionosonde observations of foF2 and hmF2 under low and high solar activity.
The results show that GMF2 better reproduces both parameters during all months of low solar activity and in most cases under high solar activity. Based on this comparison, the authors recommend GMF2 as the default option for IRI and IRI-Plas, replacing the CCIR prediction.

Ancient boundaries still influence the structural framework of Central Anatolia.
By integrating magnetic and gravity data, this study traces concealed tectonic boundaries and reconstructs the structural architecture of the Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex in greater detail.
The results suggest that inherited crustal weaknesses associated with ancient suture zones continue to influence present-day deformation.

Long-term monitoring of spring waters in western Türkiye reveals hydrogeochemical changes possibly related to the 2025 Santorini earthquake swarm.

Over 28 months, hydrogeochemical observations were compared with regional seismicity to investigate variations in spring-water properties and their possible relationship with seismic activity.

The study highlights the potential of long-term hydrogeochemical monitoring for investigating interactions between groundwater systems and regional seismicity.

Research results gain value when they are shared, discussed and made available to the scientific community.

At the VI Assembly of the Latin American and Caribbean Seismological Commission ( ), INGV researchers presented their scientific activities and highlighted another essential part of the research process: sharing scientific results through publication.

The INGV- stand reflected this connection between research and scientific publishing, presenting the breadth of 's editorial activities: from research articles in Annals of Geophysics to publications on geoethics and social geosciences and the INGV editorial series, including technical reports.

Scientific publishing is therefore not simply the final step of research, but part of a process that makes results available for discussion, comparison and further research, contributing to the circulation and advancement of scientific knowledge.

A new metadata model describes data and from rock deformation laboratory experiments.

The proposes a structured metadata model, a configuration for the data platform and a web interface to systematically annotate experiments and data files.

This approach aims to foster the adoption of principles and open science across rock deformation laboratories and, more broadly, geoscience laboratories.

The first quantitative grain-size dataset for is now available.
This new Open Access study presents, for the first time, the grain-size characterization of lahar deposits generated during the October 2024 and May 2025 rainfall events at Stromboli volcano.

The deposits are classified as hyperconcentrated stream flows and analysed using field observations, sedimentological data and high-resolution Pleiades satellite imagery.
The results provide an important dataset for reconstructing lahar processes and for improving numerical modelling and volcanic hazard assessment at Stromboli.

The Role of Scientific Publishing

Today, INGV hosted an institutional meeting dedicated to the role of scientific publishing in the research process, bringing together Angela Hessler, Ph.D., the INGV President and the Editors-in-Chief of the Institute's scientific journals.

Drawing on her editorial and scientific experience, Angela Hessler shared perspectives on how publishing contributes to the quality, dissemination and long-term value of research.

Drawing on her editorial and scientific experience, Angela Hessler shared perspectives on the evolving role of scholarly publishing in advancing research and strengthening the communication of scientific knowledge.

The meeting provided an opportunity to reflect on how scientific publishing contributes to research through editorial quality, scientific integrity and the dissemination of scientific knowledge.

Scientific publishing is an essential part of the research process.

INGV Scientific Publishing supports the dissemination of geoscience research through a complementary ecosystem of peer-reviewed journals and editorial series, each serving a specific role within scientific communication.
Among its editorial series, INGV is dedicated to sharing projects, experiences and scientific knowledge.

Volume 107 (2026) publishes the Abstracts Volume of the 7th Alfred .

Released alongside the conference, the volume enables participants to consult the abstracts while the scientific meeting is still taking place, transforming the contributions presented into a permanent and citable publication.
This publishing model highlights the role of scientific publishing in preserving scientific exchange and ensuring that research outputs are immediately accessible to the scientific community.

INGV Scientific Publishing at CNRIG 2026

Scientific conferences are where ideas are discussed, collaborations are established and new research takes shape.

For this reason, the INGV Scientific Publishing sector participated in the 9th National Conference of Researchers in Geotechnical Engineering (CNRIG 2026) in L'Aquila, presenting the Institute's scientific journals and editorial series to researchers, early-career scientists and university students.

Supporting scientific publishing also means being present where research is created and contributing to its dissemination through Diamond Open Access.
