David Mullen, ASC, is one of the most acclaimed cinematographers on the international scene and is currently nominated for the Primetime Emmy Television Awards for the series *Étoile*. He has lensed a wide range of films and television shows – from *Jennifer’s Body* to *The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel* – and is the author of key reference manuals for the cinematography profession. In this interview by Gerry Guida, he reflects on his artistic roots, the transition from film to digital, his fascination with street photography, and the influence of Italian cinema on his visual language. His major influences include directors such as Kubrick, Spielberg and Kurosawa, and cinematographers like Vittorio Storaro, Vilmos Zsigmond, Conrad Hall and Roger Deakins, along with still photography masters Saul Leiter, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Gordon Parks.
