What a trip my new fiancée and I have had!
We decided to make all our choices, destinations, activities, and food completely on the spot, and it made for such an incredible trip.
Interrail is honestly the only way to do this. Not having to worry about missing trains (because you can simply take the next one) or sticking to a fixed route is such a wonderful feeling.
The only thing we decided beforehand was to start in Rome. It had always been a dream of ours to visit it together someday.
And honestly, the best way to experience Rome is to wake up super early and explore the city in the morning. If you do that, it truly feels magical.
From there, we went to Roma Termini and spontaneously decided to head to Florence, which was absolutely amazing as well. I know it’s not exactly original, but the sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo was incredible.
Then we flipped a coin: heads was Verona, tails was Bologna. It landed on heads, so off to Verona we went. Such a gorgeous and romantic city and not that touristy either, especially compared to Rome and Florence.
Then we ran into a little problem.
I really wanted to visit Warsaw because the city is special to both of us, and I was planning to propose to her there.
We agreed to stop in Munich on the way, but I discovered a little too late that all the trains from Berlin to Warsaw were fully booked on the day we wanted to travel…
So, long story short, I somehow managed to persuade my fiancée to go on a 24-hour journey from Verona all the way to Warsaw.
When we finally arrived, we had a lovely day exploring the city. And at the end of it (after being awake for nearly 36 hours) I proposed on the rooftop of the Varso Tower, the tallest building in the European Union.
Our time in Warsaw was amazing. We got to do all the things we used to do when we lived there in 2024.
The final stop was obvious: Berlin. It made the most sense for heading back home to the Netherlands, and of course, it’s an amazing city as well.
