"The name Yellow Magic Orchestra was Haruomi Hosono's brilliant idea, conceived as a subversion of Western obsession with Asian exoticism. At the time, white magic and black magic were famous concepts, so we sarcastically created 'yellow magic' to represent our distinct Asiatic electronic sound. It was a cynical, tongue-in-cheek joke about how the West perceived us, but it instantly became a very powerful artistic manifesto."
