Look above an old storefront and you’ll sometimes see the name of a business that disappeared years ago: chocolaterie, boulangerie, boucherie.

Rather than removing them, some of these old signs and shopfront details have been preserved, including those with heritage protection. So the name above the door doesn’t always tell you what’s there today.

This is Rue Galande in the Latin Quarter, just a few minutes from Notre-Dame.

It’s one of the oldest streets in Paris and follows a route that people have been walking for centuries.

It's also home to Odette, famous for its cream puffs. Did you know that if you were to dine upstairs, you'd have a perfect view of Notre Dame?

Notre-Dame has witnessed quite a bit in its 860-year history.

-Construction began in 1163.
-Saint Louis brought the Crown of Thorns here in 1239.
-Napoleon was crowned Emperor here in 1804.

By the 19th century, the cathedral had fallen into such poor condition that a major restoration was undertaken, helped in part by renewed interest following Victor Hugo’s *The Hunchback of Notre-Dame*.

Then came the fire of April 15, 2019.

Five years of restoration later, Notre-Dame reopened in December 2024.

Walking through it is really a walk through centuries of Paris and French history.

I could have stayed here much longer. L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue has quickly become one of my favourite finds in Provence.
