An international study conducted with ENEA indicates that a 5% increase in tree cover in European cities could prevent approximately 5,000 premature deaths per year, thanks to the reduction of air pollutants such as PM2.5, NO2 and O3. The benefits would be even greater if 30% tree cover were achieved, preventing up to 12,000 deaths per year.

The thesis, proposed by a group of British scientists with the participation of DAGRI at the University of Florence, was published in the renowned scientific journal “Trends in Ecology and Evolution”. The authors explain that natural variations in oxygen levels help marine species to better tolerate the threats associated with climate change. Studying their behaviour can lead to more effective protection of the ecosystem and even better management of the fishing of important species.

Summer nights in many parts of the world have long been illuminated by one of nature's most enchanting spectacles: the synchronized dance of fireflies. These tiny bioluminescent insects, with their flashing lamps, are not only a marvel for the eyes that has inspired a vast literary output, but also important indicators of environmental health. Unfortunately, their future hangs by a thread, threatened by a host of anthropogenic factors that are turning off their lights forever.

Climate change is amplifying health risks across Europe. Increasingly frequent heat waves, forest fires, peaks in air pollution and the spread of allergenic pollen pose a growing threat, especially to the most vulnerable sections of the population. To address this challenge, the European healthRiskADAPT project, funded with EUR 5.6 million under the Horizon Europe programme, was born.

Plastic, to date, is the third most widespread man-made material on Earth, after steel and concrete. Plastic waste is now so widespread in the environment that it has been suggested as a stratigraphic indicator of today's new geological era, the Anthropocene.
