Roy Head "Last Time Around" (12 in. colored vinyl LP) Exclusive Record Store Day release
Roy Head is best known for his smash hit single of 1965, "Treat Her Right".
Roy is also known for leaving a bite scar Elvis took to his grave, and for getting kicked off the James Brown tour for being too wild and upstaging the Godfather. Roy passed away while recording what would be his last album. I was honored to help finish the process. The result is a stellar batch of blues, rock and soul, straight out of the swamp. Included is a version of Treat Her Right that I recorded with Roy, the original bass player Gene Kurtz, Sonny Boy Terry, Grady Gaines and others some years back, which was used as the soundtrack for the trailer of the Tarantino film "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood".

We are incredibly proud to release Roy Head’s final album, Last Time Around — a powerful and deeply emotional collection of songs that brings the voice, the soul, and the wild energy of this Texas music legend back to life one last time.
Roy Head was a true original. Often called the “white James Brown,” he was a show-stopping performer, a phenomenal dancer, and a pioneer of Texas blue-eyed soul, garage rock, and rhythm & blues. His 1965 smash “Treat Her Right” remains one of the most explosive recordings of its era—covered by dozens, remembered by all, and even featured in Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

🎞️ This new version of “Treat Her Right”—included on the album—was recorded in 2006 at SugarHill Studios in Houston, with Deniz Tek (Radio Birdman) on guitar, Grady Gaines on sax, and Sonny Boy Terry on harmonica. It’s raw, fierce, and unmistakably Roy.
But the heart of Last Time Around lies in Roy’s final recordings, rescued and completed after his passing in 2020. Producer Andy Bradley Mort (SugarHill Studios) gathered Roy’s longtime collaborators—including his son Sundance Head, Deniz Tek, Tim Hudgins, Paul English, and Bert Wills—to breathe new life into home recordings, adding new parts, mixing and mastering with care and love.
The result is a ten-track album that moves between soul, garage, swamp rock, and gospel—a true testament to Roy Head’s versatility and passion, and a moving farewell from one of America’s great unsung voices.

The album includes a ferocious re-recording of his 1965 hit “Treat Her Right”—the same version used in Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood—and closes with the poignant title track “Last Time Around”, recorded just months before Roy’s passing.

We are incredibly honored to share this powerful, heartfelt tribute to one of the wildest, most soulful voices in American music.
