Because Uganda isn’t (just) the gorillas… even though gorillas at arm’s length is reason enough to go. Lions clashing in the shade of a tree. A leopard dozing on a branch. An emerald viper, motionless among the leaves. The shoebill, one of the rarest birds on Earth. Surrounded by a herd of 50 elephants. Rhinos playing in the mud. Chimpanzees at ground level, close enough to feel like one of the family.

Ten days, and we still didn’t get to show you everything. This is what a country that packs rainforest and savanna, predators and primates, the Big Five and species you won’t find anywhere else in Africa, actually looks like.

This is what s***m whales mating looks like.

One of the least-documented moments in the ocean. We filmed it on our latest expedition in the Indian Ocean.
What you’re seeing: a large bull moving through a matrilineal pod (females, juveniles and calves), all related through their mothers. S***m whales are polygynous, so one dominant male mates within the group while a second bull trails behind, waiting for a chance that probably won’t come. The competition between males is intense; the scars on their heads are the receipts.
And the sound: that constant clicking is them. S***m whales live through sound: patterned clicks they use to navigate the deep and to talk to each other. You’re not just watching this encounter, you’re hearing the whole pod narrate it.
These are the largest predators on Earth, with the biggest brain of any animal that has ever lived, and we still know almost nothing about how they breed. Moments like this are how that changes.
