The little table I picked up on Facebook Marketplace and refinished as a gift for my mom. I’ll have a longer process video later but there’s a bigger story around the paint job that I can’t wait to share with you later. Speaking of paint, it’s hilarious how many people get their panties in a bunch when you paint wood. most of the time it’s with less than zero understanding of how furniture is made and finished, especially inexpensive furniture that is by no means an “antique”. For instance, the top is the only thing that’s mahogany (veneer). The turning looked to be maple and the legs may have even been a third species. And how did they make it all look good, originally? They sprayed it with a heavily pigmented stain that covers all of the grain. Essentially, diluted paint that lets only a small amount of wood grain show through. So if the painted base really bothers you, be sure and let me know when I refinish a table specifically for you and I’ll make sure you can still see all three different species. Until then, let’s all relax knowing that the intended recipient is pretty stoked about the result. 😂 By the way, the finish on the top is in Chocolate. Combined with the natural red of the mahogany makes for an incredible deep color.
