Deputising for His Majesty King Abdullah, Patriarch Theophilos III of the Holy City and all Jordan and Palestine on Monday delivered a speech during a solidarity visit to the town of Taybeh, east of Ramallah, condemning recent violent attacks by extremist settlers on Christian religious sites.

In the address, King Abdullah denounced the “barbaric assaults” on St. George’s Church (Al-Khader) and the town’s historic Christian cemetery, including acts of arson targeting trees inside the cemetery, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The King called the attacks a “blatant violation” of the sanctity of the dead, Christian holy sites, and the Christian presence in the Holy Land.

His Majesty stressed the severity of the settlers' daily intimidation of Palestinians and systematic violence against dozens of towns, villages, and camps across the occupied Palestinian territories.

The King stressed the urgent need for decisive international action to halt such attacks, particularly the ongoing atrocities against civilians in Gaza, including children, women, and the elderly.

King Abdullah also reiterated the right of the Palestinians to live in dignity and freedom and to establish their independent state on their national soil, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The visit included a delegation from the Council of Patriarchs and Heads of Churches in Jerusalem, alongside Latin Parish Priest of Taybeh Father Bashar Fawadleh, Jordan’s Ambassador to Palestine Issam Bdour, and Taybeh Mayor Suleiman Elias Khoury.

The delegation toured St. George’s Church, one of the oldest Christian churches in Palestine, the Christian cemetery, and other lands in Taybeh that are under threat of confiscation by settlers. The delegates reviewed documented violations committed by Israeli settlers against the town’s residents, properties, and religious landmarks.

During the visit, the Council of Patriarchs and Heads of Churches in Jerusalem demanded accountability for the settlers who carried out the attacks and held the Israeli occupation authorities fully responsible for allowing such acts.

They called for stronger protection of Christian holy sites in Taybeh and across Palestinian territories and urged an immediate investigation to prosecute those responsible for these violations, stressing that the residents, land, cemeteries, and churches of the town are being directly targeted by extremist settlers.

Khoury praised King Abdullah’s support for the Palestinian people and expressed gratitude to the Jordanian government and people for standing with Taybeh’s residents during these difficult times.

The King’s message and the church delegation’s visit had a “significant” impact on strengthening the morale of the local community and reinforcing their resilience in the face of these violent assaults, the mayor said.

Under the Royal Patronage of HRH Prince Feisal, Royal Jordanian Airlines (RJ), in partnership with the Jordan Airports Company (JAC), hosted a reception on Sunday at Amman Civil Airport in Markah to celebrate the arrival of its first Airbus A320neo aircraft.

The event, RJ said, marked a major milestone in the national carrier’s fleet modernisation strategy and the reactivation of Amman Civil Airport as a secondary operational hub in the capital.

The ceremony was attended by ministers, dignitaries, key industry figures, and media representatives. Prince Feisal’s arrival coincided with the landing of the new aircraft, which flew in directly from the Airbus manufacturing facility in Toulouse, France. He later toured the aircraft alongside senior officials and guests.

RJ Chairman of Board of Directors Said Darwazah and JAC Chairman Bassem Khalil Salem delivered remarks during the event, highlighting the aircraft’s role in improving operational efficiency, reducing environmental impact, and elevating passenger experience.

“This milestone reflects more than a fleet expansion. It is the realisation of a vision for modernisation and leadership that began under the late King Hussein and continues under His Majesty King Abdullah,” Darwazah said.

Darwazah also commended the reopening of Amman Civil Airport, describing it as a key step in enhancing Jordan’s aviation readiness and supporting national goals in tourism and investment.

He also said that the aircraft that arrived on Sunday was part of a plan to add 20 new A320neo jets and replace 20 older ones. He noted that 12 additional aircraft will join the fleet in the next two months.

On the evening of 10 July, a joint mission of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) came under attack during which an ICRC staff member and a PRCS volunteer were injured by gunshots.

The injured individuals were immediately evacuated and received treatment; both are in stable condition. The mission was launched to evacuate a wounded ICRC staff member and his family who had been unreachable since 4 July due to ongoing hostilities. The previously wounded ICRC colleague and his family members remain unreachable, according to a statement for The Jordan Times.

The evacuation mission was notified and coordinated, and throughout the mission the ICRC was in constant dialogue with authorities. All staff were travelling in illuminated and clearly marked vehicles bearing the red cross and red crescent emblems.

The ICRC condemns this attack. This is the second incident in which an ICRC staff member has been injured by bullets in less than a week. Both the PRCS and the ICRC have already faced numerous security incidents over the past few months. “The ICRC is outraged by these incidents which are a stark reminder of the grave danger civilians in Gaza face every day,” the statement said.

Medical and humanitarian assistance is critical for the civilian population that continues to bear the brunt of intensifying hostilities. Under international humanitarian law, medical and humanitarian relief personnel must never be attacked. The parties must do their utmost to ensure their safety including providing clear and strict instructions on respect for red cross and red crescent emblems. All possible steps must be taken to search for, collect, and evacuate the wounded and provide them with the medical care they require.

The Public Security Directorate (PSD) and the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol) on Saturday signed a “Working Arrangement” aimed at enhancing joint efforts to prevent and combat transnational crime affecting both the EU and Jordan.

The agreement established a formal legal framework for cooperation and the exchange of expertise between Europol and Jordanian law enforcement agencies.

It also facilitated joint action in key areas, including migrant smuggling, drug trafficking, money laundering, and fi****ms trafficking, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The arrangement also enables the exchange of specialised knowledge, participation in joint training activities and the provision of advice and support in individual criminal investigations.

As part of the agreement, the PSD would designate a national contact point to streamline coordination between Europol and Jordanian law enforcement entities. The arrangement also allows for the appointment of a liaison officer to Europol, who would join a network of liaison offices comprising law enforcement representatives from over 50 countries.

With the arrangement now in effect, the EU and Jordan are set to deepen their cooperation in addressing cross-border crime, strengthening Europol’s ties with a key regional partner in the Middle East, Petra reported.

Europol Executive Director Catherine De Bolle described the signing as “a pivotal step in our joint efforts to tackle the challenges and criminal threats facing both the EU, its member states, and Jordan.”
