Deputising for His Majesty King Abdullah, Patriarch Theophilos III of the Holy City and all Jordan and Palestine on Monday delivered a speech during a solidarity visit to the town of Taybeh, east of Ramallah, condemning recent violent attacks by extremist settlers on Christian religious sites.
In the address, King Abdullah denounced the “barbaric assaults” on St. George’s Church (Al-Khader) and the town’s historic Christian cemetery, including acts of arson targeting trees inside the cemetery, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
The King called the attacks a “blatant violation” of the sanctity of the dead, Christian holy sites, and the Christian presence in the Holy Land.
His Majesty stressed the severity of the settlers' daily intimidation of Palestinians and systematic violence against dozens of towns, villages, and camps across the occupied Palestinian territories.
The King stressed the urgent need for decisive international action to halt such attacks, particularly the ongoing atrocities against civilians in Gaza, including children, women, and the elderly.
King Abdullah also reiterated the right of the Palestinians to live in dignity and freedom and to establish their independent state on their national soil, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The visit included a delegation from the Council of Patriarchs and Heads of Churches in Jerusalem, alongside Latin Parish Priest of Taybeh Father Bashar Fawadleh, Jordan’s Ambassador to Palestine Issam Bdour, and Taybeh Mayor Suleiman Elias Khoury.
The delegation toured St. George’s Church, one of the oldest Christian churches in Palestine, the Christian cemetery, and other lands in Taybeh that are under threat of confiscation by settlers. The delegates reviewed documented violations committed by Israeli settlers against the town’s residents, properties, and religious landmarks.
During the visit, the Council of Patriarchs and Heads of Churches in Jerusalem demanded accountability for the settlers who carried out the attacks and held the Israeli occupation authorities fully responsible for allowing such acts.
They called for stronger protection of Christian holy sites in Taybeh and across Palestinian territories and urged an immediate investigation to prosecute those responsible for these violations, stressing that the residents, land, cemeteries, and churches of the town are being directly targeted by extremist settlers.
Khoury praised King Abdullah’s support for the Palestinian people and expressed gratitude to the Jordanian government and people for standing with Taybeh’s residents during these difficult times.
The King’s message and the church delegation’s visit had a “significant” impact on strengthening the morale of the local community and reinforcing their resilience in the face of these violent assaults, the mayor said.
