The Tojinbo Cliffs are a dramatic and rugged stretch of coastline in northern Fukui Prefecture, Japan. Famous for their rare geological formations, sweeping ocean views, and local legends, the cliffs offer both natural beauty and cultural intrigue. Visitors can stroll along the clifftops, join a boat tour, or explore the surrounding attractions.

About the Cliffs
• Unique geology: Stretching for over one kilometer, the towering cliffs are composed of columnar jointing—a rare volcanic formation created more than 12 million years ago. This striking structure, featuring long hexagonal and pentagonal pillars, can be found in only two other places in the world.
• Natural Monument: Designated as both a National Place of Scenic Beauty and a Natural Monument of Japan, the Tojinbo Cliffs are celebrated for their distinctive rock formations and geological significance.
• Dynamic views: The sheer rock faces plunge dramatically into the Sea of Japan, where powerful waves crash against the base, creating an ever-changing seascape. You can admire the formations from the coastal walking trail above or take a sightseeing boat for views from the sea.
• The Tojinbo legend: The cliffs are named after a corrupt Buddhist monk, Tojinbo, who was pushed to his death by his rivals. According to legend, his vengeful spirit still haunts the area, stirring up rough seas and violent storms.

Things to Do
• Walk the clifftop trail: Follow the coastal path that winds along the edge of the cliffs for breathtaking views. Be cautious—there are no guardrails along some sections.
• Take a boat tour: Experience the cliffs from a new perspective with a 30-minute sightseeing cruise around Tojinbo and nearby Oshima Island. (Note: operations may be suspended in bad weather.)
• Visit Oshima Island: Cross the red pedestrian bridge to Oshima, a small island featuring a shrine and more fascinating rock formations. The island is said to be a spiritual “power spot” with a mysterious atmosphere.
• Climb Tojinbo Tower: From this 55-meter-tall observation tower, enjoy sweeping views of the coastline, Oshima Island, and, on clear days, even Mount Hakusan in the distance.
• Explore the shopping street: Near the entrance to the cliffs, a lively street is lined with seafood restaurants and souvenir shops. Don’t miss the chance to try local specialties such as fresh crab.

Look: RESTAURANT IN JAPAN, IT'S BEEN 60 YEARS THAT THEY HAVEN'T CLEANED THE STAIN AND SAUCE IN THEIR BARBECUE!
