Foreigners living in Japan could soon face harsh new visa rules if they fall behind on payments.
The government plans to deny visa renewals to mid- and long-term residents who fail to pay taxes, social insurance, or hospital bills.
The system, expected by 2027, would affect foreign students, workers, and even families.
Already, local trials have seen visas denied for those with unpaid national health insurance.
Critics warn this move may unfairly target foreigners, even though official data shows their unpaid medical bills make up a small fraction of the total.
Supporters argue it is necessary to prevent abuse and maintain “harmony” in Japanese society.
The government has linked the policy to rising public fears of foreign-related crime and system misuse.
For many foreign residents, this means missing a payment could literally cost them their right to stay in Japan.
